slow slow slow
« on: May 10, 2008, 01:24:31 AM »
i just love to see posts on here of folk who are building a wind gen.

as i am doing the same i find it helps me to keep at it.

but its turning into a slow process .

the first one i did was a single rotor . every thing worked out well.

but it never made a good lot of power. coils  were wrong .

not the right wire or amount of turns.

  but it all worked ok.

so it was my idea to make a second rotor later.  but i thought i might as well do it now and make a new stator at the same time.

i spent a bit of time rebuilding a old lathe i got from a friend for nothing.

so when i finished it i started on the single rotor gen.

this lathe was so old it might have done bits in its past for real wind mills of old.

but it was good to get this junk i got from my mate running again.

i found sum history about the old lathe and it never was a good quality lathe.

but it done its best for me.

so when i saw another old lathe on ebay going cheap. i bid and win it.

it was only a short bed and had no tail stock.

but i could turn just over 14" on the face plate.

so that was great as my next gen will have a 12"steel disc.

after a lot of work cleaning mending and painting i was able to make a smaller

9" rotor to match the one i had.

this new short bed lathe was great.

it made i nice job of of turning a nice new steel disc.

i also made a new type fitting for the twin rotor.

   a tapir lock hub.

but now i had to modify the old rotor.to match the new one.

  boy was that a problem.

as it had the 8 magnets on it . its lucky it was potted in resin.

it stuck to the lathe bed the vice . the tools .

trying to measure what i was doing was a nightmare.

if it wasent for the cost of the magnets i would have scrapped it.

but thinking i was lucky it only had 8 magnets and not 12 like the others .

or it might still be stuck to the lathe.

the weather is good for fiber glass work at the moment so would be great to get the new rotor potted.

when thats done i can have a brake.

its all coming together but very slowly.

still reading the board for past and present.

getting to understand so much more now.

i do prefare the bench work .

its the part i enjoy most.

my next gen will be so much more easy.  i got the plans to fallow.

two new hobbies i got now.

building wind gens and playing with metal lathes.

  now to explain the pics.

two are the lathe pics posted on ebay

the lathe as i got it. others how it looks now.

a pic of my old lathe and one with old rotor complete with

 metal turnings.

but i still love to watch for new building work on here.

and think soon very soon mine will be working.

the gray rotor with two black discs is how i had the single rotor fitted before.

so got to make a new shaft aswell.

its not every one who has a lathe or who would like one.

its so simple to build a wind gen using a car or trailer hub.

   but i love messing about.
