Catch the wind
« on: June 01, 2008, 09:34:36 PM »
Well work has begun on catching the wind. As noted in my past diary entry I was going to build a dbl helix, and eventually I will. I needs parts that are hard to find to creat the shape. So I have decided to build a model of one of the designs I was working on with Auto Cadd.

It took the better part of the morning to construct. By 2:00 pm it was up on the roof. It is seriously needing proper materials but with a little tweaking the thing goes. Like stink I might add.

I think I might build a big version.

Edad. This unit is 18" c x 24" l. I think I will experiment with similar design but slightly different proportions before I build big. I'm wondering if there is a way to predict torque using geometry. I'll spen. a little time with the cad.

From experience things that spin really fast in

the wind... may not when a load is connected to

them.

Hope you have good luck with your project.

Your are probably right. More testing has to be done. I'm thinking of ways to test torque.

Here is my second VWAT design. Admitedly stolen from the internet. I chose this because it looks great, the claims for power generation are great and I had the materials kicking around. This model is 28" d. and 36" h. The internet version is 72" d and 96" h.

I have also put together a solid mounting frame for the genny. I'm still not sold on the stator design so therefore I have left it in MDF.

I have installed a switch to short out six of the coils and another switch and plug to test from.

The weather is clearing up and cooling down. Hopefully It'll fly.

Cheers

No brake. A straight edge a measuring tape and a sturdy work surface. I'd really like the full size, if and when, to be rolled  w/ no creases. It did fly a little yesterday but the winds only got up to around 10 kph. The rotor is far too heavy for this size sail. Thanks though. I'm happy with how it turned out.

BTW I've just begun the Royal Bank project over @ Zoo Park and River Rd. Stop by if you see a goofy white hard hat wondering around.

Cheers
