My Mag Setting Tool
« on: August 18, 2008, 12:23:42 AM »
It's nothing special but works awesome for me.Here's a pic of the tool if you want to call it a tool.

The tool has a thin sheet of fiberglass milkhouse board for ease of loading and unloading. When the mag is set spacers are installed until cured.

The density of the tools steel is less than the rotor for easy removal.

The rotor is center punched in multiple spots where the mags sit and the mags are roughed up with a hacksaw blade.I'm using the epoxy i posted earliar on.Seems Nice

 Here's a pick after setting

Havin fun and 52 more to go.

Hi Tom

Ya, gig or rig will work also.

Has you can tell i've had mags do strange things to me in the past. :v)

That looks to be a good idea for a radial. could probably adapt it for axial if the first magnet is at the right radius.

hi vawt man .when i first looked at the photo i thought sumone was

setting up there branding iron to do the cattle . (VM BRAND)

is the second magnet higher than the first.

your a brave man  using 54 magnets at one go.

i will enjoy fallowing your progress .  and will look forward

 to your updates .

i wish you luck (we all need a bit of that)

     looks good so far.

I'm impressed.

I just would be afraid the last space(between mag 54 and mag 1)can be slightly different from the others.Don't know how accurate your jig(gig rig) is.

Don't know what it would mean for for performance either.

Sorry,I've allways my thing to say.

Go on,let us know about the result.Looks great.

Thanks Stone

Something weird happened,I just got home from work and had a mag preloaded in the tool from yesterday.Coated it with epoxy and when it was in the set position the mag flew out onto it's neighbor.

After rechecking the polarity, the mag was inserted wrong in the tool.So i guess it also has a failsafe built in.Don't want that to happen again.

There are 18 tread marks around the wheel and using them has a guide.I think you can see them in the pics.

I had a whole lot less magnets to place on that. How many days to finish the mags you think?

Got the stock, wasted all my profits buying moe band-aids.

Vawt: Nice! Great to see someone also trying a large diameter radial. What is the diameter?

Mark,

I did a search, but it pulled up a BUNCH of your other posts, seems like everything but the 32inch! I was running short on internet time too, but adding the 32in to a google search found it!

Nice! Don't know if you read my diary post, but I have a cabinet maker friend who is helping me on a 20incher. We're making the stator using a banding machine he has, but it could be done manually. Basically, it uses 1 1/2inch wide wood banding, about 1/16" thick. There's an automatic glue applicator on the machine...again, can be done manually. Just keep going round & round until you have a "hoop". Be sure to make it with extra material on the I.D. and O.D.. Once it's made and mounted, we'll spin it & use a lathe tool to make it fit the I.D. and O.D. as needed.

In my case, we're looking for 2inch wide material. But the idea is to have an easily machined form to locate the coils, since fiberglass will be formed around them for the finished product.

I think your idea will work great. Is it like coutertop laminate material?

Here's a pic of a plywood stator core i played with for a brief time.

Here's some other pics i didn't show yet.

Mark,

That's EXACTLY what it is! (counter-top lamination material). Except, for this application we'll be used raw-untreated wood. I'm stil exploring options/configurations for my radial genny. I've pretty much decided on 1inch dia. mags x 3/8 thick. I was surprised when I used a gauss calculator on one of the magnet sites & for a 0.09" gap, the 1inch x 3/8 thick ones had a slightly higher figure than the 1x2x1/2 ones! Of course, you get a better working area with the rectangular ones by having a longer "leg" on the working side of the field.

Still not sure exactly how many mags/coils I should go with.

I'm up to 16 so far and taking a day off on friday(hopefully),so should be done this weekend sometime.I give each mag time to set 1/2 hour and visit the board.

I use a weak ferrite to double check polarity and it's cool when i move fast past the mags the vibration created in my hand.

The tool is working fine and so is the poxy.

 I'm havin a blast.

 Thanks Oz for asking.
