What went wrong?
« on: August 25, 2008, 02:22:40 PM »
It might be useful to go along with Woofs

instructions on how to post pics?

What went wrong?

this is one example...

Q I tried to post a pic and all I got was a

blank...when I right clicked on the blank and

then clicked on properties then when I went to

that address instead of the image I got...

(which is what I got on a newbie's posting)

  Note to newbies.....whenever you run across

something interesting in Otherpower...click on

Add to Hotlist...right then it's easier than

 doing a search a week or so from now. You can

always remove from hotlist later if don't need

it.

ya what you are describing is that new scoop bug in the photo uploads section it has been giving allot of newbies and older users alike allot of trouble lately we have asked ADMIN to look into it but everything moves slow up on the mountain if you want you could send ADMIN an email about it maybe if he gets enough mail about it he will do something about it his email address is at the bottom of the page.

Norm;

That simply ended up being a link into his files area on fieldlines. Click that Tower.... link and a big photo pops up. Too big to include as a photo unless Kurt is away, anyway.

The whole users photos system seems about to implode. Multiple issues and not at all user friendly.

Might be time to light a fire under ADMIN to get at fixing some of this stuff. I gave up asking for help with anything related to the forum.

When I upload a photo, I then look at my list to see if it's there. If not, I check the "confirm" box and delete it.

I think the problem has to do with file names. Imbedded spaces cause problems and I also suspect that you can't have two files with the same name, even if they are not in the same folder.

The posting board software may be written fail safe between operating systems.

Read the wiki on file naming conventions to get some idea how nasty this can be.

If the admin's are reading, I would be a little concerned about the above pic. The user has browse access to the web sites directories. This is bad. By default, directory browsing should be turned off in the web server config files. Having it turned on means anyone can browse around the folders, except for those with a "default page". It also means they can find out what OS and what web server version is used, in this case CentOS and Apache 2.2.3. Knowing what version is running makes hacking a lot easier.

Glenn;

All good points and info.

Problem is, unless the place actually explodes or catches fire, ADMIN will not do anything whatsoever to fix or otherwise maintain the forum.

I stopped suggesting maintenance items a couple years ago when I realized a Luddite was in charge of sysadmin duties here. Cannot even open dialog about it. Go figure.

I really don't want to get started on it but a lot of good forum specific advice here gets completely ignored by the only person capable of making it happen.

His email is at the bottom of most pages here. Feel free to contact him and express your concerns perhaps he will respond.

Just how it is.

Hi Tom.

Just thinking, it might be an idea to delete my message, or at least the details of the Apache version. Same with that picture. I had a look on Google and there are some security issues with that version, it was silly of me to put the version number in text in my post, means it can be found with a search.

Just to be safe.
