Finally my first hawt is up !
« on: October 23, 2008, 10:13:49 PM »
Finally got my first machine up and spinning. It's a 12 volt machine, 9 foot dual rotor, 12 magnet, 9 coil and 63 turns per coil.

I have spent a lot of time on here reading everyone's posts. They are all very interesting to me and I was able to learn a lot. I like reading all the Ideas and suggestions that every one comes up with and that helped me finish my project with out having to ask a question on here.

My mill has been up about a week now. The first three days were the required "no wind days". The last couple days I have only been getting about 5 to 8 mph winds and Gusts to 10 mph rarely. The cut in speed so far looks like 7 mph and when it did get to 10 mph I got 5 or 6 amps. I will get more information later when I can get a tachometer and another volt meter hooked up.I will try to insert a picture but if it doesn't show up, its in my files or photo section

Thank you all again for the information and enjoyment. I am more that happy to answer any questions and read any comments you have.

Congrats Tom.  Who doesn't love Snoopy!

It's a fine looking machine and I definitely love the fact that Snoopy's driving it!

Thank's hiker,

The rotors are made from 1/4" steel 12" diameter. I used a # 12 wire, and the magnets are 1" diameter x 3/4" thick. I used two of these side by side to make it as close to 1"x 2"x 3/4" as I could. I used a trailer hub with 5 studs for the main shaft and bearing

The rotor came out a little thick at about 3/4" so I am waiting to get some wind and more numbers to see what it will do.

Hi,

Is that a blob on the photo, or is something attached to the tip of one blade?

Balance weight?

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

Hi Steve;

You have a really good eye there Steve! That is a balance weight. It's a few washers screwed in to the end of the blade with two inch screws. That is my dirty quick balance job to get the mill up fast for testing. It's on two of the blades but it's not going to be permanent

I am still waiting for the wind I have shotrened the blades once all ready and may do it again The mill is only on a 26 foot temperory tower and is not hard to get up and down.

Don't go cutting any more off the blades until you have had enough wind to do some thorough testing. You can't get anything in very light winds and I think you are very close to the mark if you saw 5A at 10 mph.

It is all to easy to mess about in winds that aren't capable of doing anything and then realise you have gone too far when you do get a good wind.

There is nothing available below 7mph and even if you shorten the blades to get a few mA it will seriously mess up the performance in the better winds.

Keep the swept area as large as you can consistent with cut in at 7mph ( or even 8).

Doubling up on those magnets gives you something quite reasonable, I don't have time to check figures now but I suspect you are close to the mark at present so give it a real good try without altering things.

Hi Flux

Thank's for the encouragement. I am still just beginning the testing mode so I won't be doing anything drastic with out some more information. I Think I might try to extend the tower another 10 feet and tighten up the rotor gap before I would cut amy more off the blades.

When I can get a good cut in measurement ect I will post more here in the dairie
