Small victory for RE!
« on: November 26, 2008, 06:00:07 PM »
We had a power cut in the middle of the night a few nights ago, while Jean was giving our newborn a feed.  It was rather difficult to continue with no light at all, but I was able to put on my solar-powered (LED) light and all was well.

Understated but significant success for my little off-grid system, IMHO.

(The power-cut was from a fault in a high-voltage underground cable that cut off ~2,000 customers but took only about 30 minutes to clear, or at least route around...)

Damon,

Without going into your intimacy, it was not clear if the feed was bottle of breast. Of course there are many personal and other reasons why a child ends up being breast fed or bottle fed and this comment is in no way aimed at implying your child should be breast fed.

Nevertheless, I think breast feeding is a wonderful way of addressing energy conservation, renewable energy and protection of the environment.

  1. - no need to produce, transport, market, publicize and recycle bottles, infant formula, packaging
  2. - no need to heat up the formula
  3. - no need for water to mix up with the formula
  4. - you can usually manage (according to my experience) without lighting
  5. - energy for milk production comes from eating renewable resources that may be carbon neutral especially if the mother is vegetarian

Morgan is being breast-fed as his sister was, but it is apparently quite difficult in complete darkness with a baby still only a very few days old and not always very good at keeping latched on!

Yes, breast is best...

My wife always said she marvelled at how other women would bottle-feed because breastfeeding is "just so hard."

At night when the baby was hungry, it took only a minimal amount of effort to lift up her shirt slightly.

As a bonus, as a father of 2, I can honestly say that I NOT ONCE had to stand by the microwave / stove at 3 a.m. heating up milk for the baby.  :)

That is definitely a sneaky undeclared bonus for the father, yes!

Unfortunately Morgan is taking up to 90mins at a time to feed, so mum is still losing a fair amount of sleep.

HD;

That is why "pop" gets up, gathers the rug rat and delivers it to the dairy bar along with any gear needed like blankets a warm towel, etc.

Or you can do what I did in the squandered youth. Just find out of town work for the first 6 months.

DamonHD;

 Have been having a nice read here, while posting my own little victory.

Wanted say YES SIR!! on those little victories!!

All of our children, as of the middle of last month, are over the age of 18, but can say that these little victories are what can make it very self satisfying and very much worth the effort.

of the 53,000 people without power, there were at least 2 with lights and making coffee :-). The "bar" TomW spoke about was shut down many a year ago:-)

Keep on having fun!!
