The big ol' TV antennae
« on: February 13, 2009, 01:34:52 PM »
We have this big TV antennae that I've always wanted to tear down 'cuz we don't do TV... and there is nothing pretty about that big old metal tower.  So, now I'm wondering if it couldn't be used for the windmill.  It starts down on the ground in cement.  And, then it is bolted to the house near the roof line and it continues up a little ways from there.  Any comments?

Wanna;

While it is generally considered to not be a great idea to attach a turbine to a dwelling, your TV tower would likely handle a smallish turbine.

Got some dimensions? Total height, attachment to house height, # of legs, leg spread, material size, etc?

Or better yet, info from the tower tag itself if its got one.

There have been several folks that have used these as turbine towers just not very large diameter prop on them. Maybe a photo would help.

Basically the answer is "probably" with some reservations. A typical "Rohn" TV tower solidly attached somewhere above half height to your dwelling may be perfectly capable of a 3 or 4 foot turbine. A lot depends on the actual hardware. They can be guyed to stiffen the top, also but thats another issue that depends on the location and the hardware.

Once you provide some information on the details we can probably provide more details on the how of doing it.

Good Luck with it.
