The cost of water and washing....
« on: March 08, 2009, 01:26:59 PM »
My latest note, provoked by an interesting ad in the (London) Times yesterday, unusually showing their assumptions for their latest planet-saving gadget.

Actually, I suspect there's merit in it, but in any case it forced me to think a bit.

One interesting factoid that fell out of my analysis was that the energy, water and detergent costs are about equal for both the washing machine and dishwasher.

Note that I've not really attempted an 'eco' costing, just financial.

I twigged to this a while ago. To reduce my costs, I monitored the laundry job for  what was mostly washed and I bought more of them. Just having more socks, underwear and shirts extended the distance between wash days and that reduced the cost nicely.

I have enough of a family that the interval between washes (always full!) is more or less independent of my activity, but I like your analysis!  I'll add a note to make sure to run the machine full.

Thanks

By the sound of it the main bearing in our washing machine is about to die, so...  Time to hunt for new A-rated washer-drier.
