Multiple in hand wire for coil windings
« on: May 06, 2009, 05:14:54 PM »
I was wondering if there was a conversion chart to figure out wire equivalents such as, what gauge would 2 22awg wires 2 in hand equal.

I would like to think that you just double the diamiter and check the chart but I don't believe that it really works that way.

The American AWG system results in a number 3 lower being twice the csa.

If you use 2 in hand #22 it is equivalent to a single #19.

I can't see what other virtue the scheme possess, everyone else uses diameter.

3 wire sizes equals twice the cross section, so if you need twice as big as 22g, you would use 19g.

You multiply the diameter by the square root of two to double the cross section area.  Multiplying the diameter by two multiplies the area by four.
