Duel rotor is up again
« on: June 27, 2009, 01:26:08 PM »
We finally found time to finish off the belated service on my duel rotor, some pics and info, original diary here...

http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2009/5/22/114339/658

The blades were sanded back and coated with two part epoxy resin, I don't know how it will last but time will tell.

I added one extra layer of magnets to each rotor, as I felt the original ones had weakened somewhat, long story.

I gave it good clearance to try and avoid any rubbing this time....

The astute among you will notice something wrong with this pic.

We did a final balance, we use nuts either side to track blades before putting lock nuts on the outside.

The gin pole used on this unit, we attach a small cable to the forward anchor to hold the gin pole upright while removing the winch.

Up and flying the next day, at dawn, good wind has seen it peaking at 1.5Kw in gusts of up to 15 m/s. All three turbines have been averaging a good 60 amps most of the day peaking over 100A but still have not fully topped up the batteries, very little sun, no I will not drop my dacks in front of the solar panels.

The best performance is in the higher winds like 12 m/s when output climbs rapidly.

Nice work and congratulations! You made me study the picture to figure out what's wrong. Than after a couple minutes it stood right out. I don't want to give it up but I will say size.

Am I wrong or unless this were a downwind machine is that one blade on backwards ? The only other thing I could see from your challenge about the one photo is what appears to be a pretty good bow in your stator from maybe uneven tension on your mounts. This could be an optical illusion, cameras can do funny things sometimes.  Dave B.

Yea the blades are on backwards, it was raised last Thursday and it's Monday morning here, we have had strong winds since then and the performance is very good.

Nice rig man -

I particularly like the hazy picture toward the end with it fully erected; it seem s to capture the tall and proud feel fairly well, I'm sure... is that a didgeridoo I hear in the background? :)

LOL yeah it looks like it definitely gave you some trouble there... But alas, she flies again! As long as mistakes are learned from... :) All that is needed is the spirit of the fearless granddaughter. Oh and a couple of parts...

Steve at that stage it had only been up 2 days, was a triple rotor with 12' dia. blades 80' tall, it's now duel rotor with 60' tower and 10' blades.

Oh and that noise you heard was me passing wind, sorry!!! only wind instrument here.

Remembers to sneak into Allan's place when I visit and hide all the baked bean tins. That way when we're all sitting by the campfire it wont become a blazing saddles episode.

I noticed the rotors are different diameters. Not that big of a deal but something that stuck out.
