GE ECM survives 61 mph winds
« on: November 12, 2009, 06:36:41 AM »
We are right in the midst of a North Easter here in Norfolk VA, and my little ECM conversion is surviving 60+ mph wind speeds.

Max wattage was 117W, (ECM seems to top out @ 8.5 amps in 25 mph winds)

configuration, running 6 cut back hornet/eagle blades (52" diameter)

I think it went supersonic at some point

That seems kind of low doesn't it?

How are the coils configured?

Not really, its wired for a lower cut in. (1/2 hp ECM, each phase: 3 coils series then parallel to the next 3 , then rectified. All 3 phases rectified sep.)

Cut in about 320 rpm

I live in poor wind area, except the occasional North Easter, or Hurricane

I've flown the 1 HP in 80 plus MPH winds with my "Jerry Blasdes"

Without any problems and no furling. That was at 49".

The ECMs are alot of fun. I now have a realy nice mounting braket asembly for the ECMs. I wish I could post a picture. They are powdwer coated black, Use a stainless steel bolt have a real nice mouting pad and they are only $10 each.

I'll keep deleting pictures till my files here will accept my 640

x480 at 90070 bytes pictures. This is well with this forums requierments but it won't let me load them?

When all Mmy picture were deleted I could? Maybe I have too many picture of this size in my files?

Sorry got off topic here, I'm just frustrated and I would like to share info and pictures.

I sure like the old sytem, OH well this new sytem is better right? LOL.

Sounds good Rover - would be inclinded to think you could "squeeze" a bit more out of it - especially at that wind speed??

Must have been hair raising watching in those winds!!

hey jerry...

try photobucket.com or a photo storage site you perfer..

then just make a link there when you have something to show..

yeah...16mb isnt much for storage--still have to clean out my files..

must be a lot of users locked out on posting picts ???

but its still a great site--and free at that!!!!!

Hi Jerry

Why not set up a free account with http://HTTP://www.Photobucket.com

It takes a little cut and paste , but its really NOT THAT bad.

The Amperage was probably also affected by the other wind turbine producing about 30+ amps into my batter bank that was pretty close to 100% (700 amp/hr). Until it lost 2 of its blades anyway

Hey Jerry Could you shoot me a picture of your mount? I may want to purchase a couple or so. I'm picking up the poles for 3 more towers this month. and the mounts may come in handy.

The E-mail is: johndebbie<at>windstream.net

We had a big NW wind storm last night. I have a 1/2 hp ECM flying with a set of my 4ft diameter "Jerry Blades".

No furling on this genny. I also saw 120 watts at 25 mph. The last reading on the anemometer was 43 mph.

The machine is fine this morning, no problems.

Sounds comparable.

Based on my bench tests from http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2009/10/24/10402/805

I'm thinking about taking each phase apart to 3 sets of 2 coils in series, then parallel the sets for a phase. Will raise the cutin, but should also raise max amps at higher rpm

I often wondered about a combination of the 2.

Say 2 phases 2 sets of 3 coils in series.

And one phase 3 sets of 2 coils in series.

Still get power in low wind, but when that become less efficient, the high wind coils would come into their own.

I can imagine it working quite well.
