Welcome Powers6

Besides all those nasty regulations, you have a vast amount of reading to do. Bonus is you've come to the right place. Check out some of the awesome alternators some of the big guys are building.

Good luck,Jim

A good place would be the Dans book in the Other Power store, it has the plans for a complete 10" battery charging mill.

Never mind found it. how do they rate the turbine? If it is A 10kw turbine is that per hr,day. I know its at a certan speed just not sure how its figured. What is the best desine for tiltdown tower and/or is it better not to tilt?

Well, the good thing is you live in a decent wind area. The bad thing is it takes a lot of research and the decisions taken in building your own machine take knowledge. A lot of that knowledge shown here was gained through experience.

As most of the turbines built here are not built with exactly the same materials, to the same voltages and with the same build quality or blades .. it becomes similar to a crap shoot. The bet is a bit different and if you do all of your homework you stand a good chance of not crapping out. Then again, don't expect to win everything on the table on the first roll of the dice.

Good luck, and don't expect to be done by New Year's morning.

As far as regulations go, there are several different areas you will need to check on.  One is any utility requirements for interconnection.  They are likely pretty simple and straightforward if you use any reputable inverter, probably just requiring a labeled disconnecting means, an inspection, and perhaps a specific metering arrangement.  If you have a wind turbine, you should check local zoning law for any restrictions on height or size.  Local laws may require a building permit for the solar and wind installs too.  Have fun.

Cool.  Federal 30% tax credit on small wind and solar (and other stuff), no requirement that the property be your primary residence, installed by licensed contractors, yadda...

Measurements are in power (kilowatts), not energy (kilowatt hours).

As I understand it, turbines are usually rated for something like their max sustained output (before burnout in high winds) or their output in some unreasonably high wind.  It's far above what you'll average in typical winds.  You use that for things like sizing the wiring so it doesn't catch fire during peak generation.

To figure how much usable energy to expect you need the curve of the turbine's output versus wind speed.  Then you mung that together with a wind distribution table/graph for your site.
