Help needed
« on: February 20, 2010, 11:37:04 AM »
Hi I was recently given a whisper 600 back from the world power days. Electricly it tested fine but had bad bearings. stripped it down, cleaned it up, and replaced bearings. While putting it back together I would like to replace the brushes. Of course swwp dosnt have parts and no longer supports the older modles. I havent been able to find anything like this on the internet, (or something simmular) that might work. Does anybody here have any idea where to get solder on brush pads or other ideas that might work?  Thanks (trying to attach page from manual) I cna't seem to attach it here, I did upload it to my files but only shows in my photo uploads, not in my files. Please help admin. I will try again later.

Don't have any idea if this will help but a quick search found this.

Is the brush material worn thin? What do the brushes run on? Brass rings?

Hi, Slip rings seem to be brass, brushes seem to be carbon on cooper so it can be soldered on. The carbon is getting thin.

Thanks, a search of there site didn't come up with any brushes. Seems to be mostly contactors for motor starters and switchgear.

Might try taking one of the sets to a motor shop.

It may be a semi-common, or only semi-obscure, brush.

Or they may be able to figure something out with what is available.

if all else fails

take a new brush, from something bigger

carefully with a specially prepared hacksaw blade or a dremel tool

cut a groove on each side of the brush

then from a hobby shop or maybe a scrap piece of copper sheet, cut out

the backing plates and leave enough to foldup and into the grooves in the brush

then carefully tweak down the excess to trap the brush and lock it to the backing copper backing plate

tin and sweat to  your old support arms.

if it were me i would make them slightly larger to get more friction area.

if i knew how to post a picture or rather a jpeg i could illustrate the process

much easier, a pic worth a 1000 words as they say.

If it were me I'd polish up the brass rings and put it together, the carbon likely wears at a very slow rate, check them in a year and see if there is any wear.

If someone types how to do it, it gets goofy...

So here is a image of the text.  :)

Be sure to preview it, sometimes it gets goofy anyway.
