Homebuilt corn burning stove -with pics
« on: May 12, 2006, 11:48:43 PM »
Hello everyone. Today I started beta testing on a corn stove I designed and scratch built. It has twin hoppers that hold about 7 bushels. Thats enough for 4-6 days at the rate its been burning. From each hopper an auger feeds the fire pot. There are two blowers , a small one for combustion and another for moving the air into the room. The exhaust from the firebox travels through a series of tubes (heat exchangers) into a secondary chamber. It then exhausts straight out the back (direct vent). There isn't any visible smoke and the exhaust is not any hotter than what you would get from a clothes dryer. Of course...I hate doing things typical so I added some creepy and cool style to it.
The next phase is adding the water coil in the chamber at the rear of the stove. I'll keep you posted on that. The last part will be chroming the grille, door and ash door. I'll worry about the shiny parts after testing is done.

That is really neat!  Are you going to give us more details of what is inside?

More importantly, how much for you to build one (disassembled) to ship to me???  :)

You know, depending on the hours of labor, you could make a pretty fortune selling those.......

basically the corn drops in a 4"x6"x5" deep firebox . The firebox sits in another box and is fed combustion air from the smaller blower I mentioned in the original post. Air is introduced to the inside of the fire box via a buttload of 3/16" holes.
I'm not mentioning at this point whether its a metric buttload or a standard english buttload. Once the process is started (dry wood chips/alcohol) and lit..
the auger is started and the corn takes over. The auger/feeder is fully adjustable.

Like anything, the first one takes all the time and boyyyyyyyyy did I figure out
better and more simple ways of building a second stove. Luckily I have a CNC plasma
cutter in house so making parts was a breeze. I'll definetly consider making them or
atleast weld together kits. The stove I built here had some not so simple features
that could be eliminated..like the twin hopper which neccessitated twin augers feeding a central tube. If someone doesn't mind loading a bushel or two of corn in
once a day..that can be eliminated. I'll keep everyone posted if there seems to be
interest in it.   len

WOW, that is one hot looking unit. ;) I will join the others and ask for some pictures of the insides. I am also interested in the BTU rating, where you get your corn supply and how often you have to refill. Great job. Scott

I would want to know a bit more about corn heating. I've heard about heating with Corn Oil, but not with the corn itself. It's removed from the cob and dried ,  right ?

what do you do with the cobs?

I've heard it hurts a lot when used that way...

Tried newspaper once, just for fun. It's not what it's cracked up to be.

Sometimes I'm glad I'm a city boy.

I have to add my $.02 worth and say it looks great and I'd like more details of construction and could entertain the idea of a kit.

Dayum!  Did you ever think of building custom bikes?  You could have your own teevee show.
