In about 1985 ETSU at Harwell tested the AUR Water Engine, a device for abstracting power from heads of 3m. and under on rivers/streams and inshore tidal using "tide ponds". The initial output is high pressure hydraulic oil which can then be used to power any rotating machinery including electricity generators and heat pumps.
