Ppowerspout
« on: February 18, 2010, 03:22:28 PM »
Anybody have any thoughts on this?

https:/www.powerspout.com

Pelton wheel with a Fisher Paykel motor.

I have 100' of head with 20gpm, they say 163W which seems a bit low compared to numbers I see for others like Harris which say I should get more like 250W but perhaps the powerspout numbers are more "real life"?

Looks pretty much the same as another NZ product:

But the EcoInnovation one is a bit cheaper.

Don Harris spent years making incremental improvements in his units. The PM generator uses high grade steel in the rotor backing to the magnets to get a few more percentage power output. The magnets are moveable to fine tune the rotor strength to match the water input. All these things make it more efficient than taking a motor and trying to modify it to make a generator. The powerspout is lower cost but made of plastic instead of metals.  The Harris unit has a curved top to guide the water exiting the top of the peltons out and away from interfering with the rotation.

The Harris units have been tested in the real world to put out their rated output.

Personally I'd spend the extra money for a Harris. I've got two. The higher efficiency allows me to start using them earlier in the gray weather of the fall.
