AC motor looks like DC Help/advice please
« on: January 04, 2007, 05:12:02 PM »
I am planning on building my first wind generator (I first thought about it 30 years ago)I have an old motor from a washing machine. The label says it is made by Arcel Inc.It runs on ball bearings and has about 36 segments on the commutator. I have removed the stator and temporaliy placed magnets on each side of the rotor. When it is rotated it gives out DC. Is this to be expected and will it be OK for wind generation? Many thanks for your help.

It was likely a universal series motor that could run on ac or dc.

You have converted it to a permanent magnet dc generator. It will work, but may be fast and very limited output. May be ok as a starter project but I would regard it as more likely to be a toy than a source of significant power. You will need some decent curved magnets and a steel housing to stand a chance.
