Rotor attachment methods
« on: March 15, 2007, 06:30:54 PM »
I am wondering what ideas there are to attach the rotor to a shaft.  I currently have a couple flange style discs with a center hole with set screws.  Are there any other easy ways to attach the rotor to the shaft?  I think the set screws aren't great cuz there's only one on each flange.  I have some shaft collars with 2 set screws each.  I was thinking of drilling holes through the collars to attach the rotor to them.  Isn't there an easier way?

Single set screws won't work. Unless you have two at right angles it will waddle off.

Drilling a hole through the shaft and bolting will not be much better and will weaken the shaft.

Try to get a second hole drilled and tapped into your flanges.

Here we have things called "taper locks" that make an excellent fixture to the shaft, but the price of taper lock flanges may frighten you.

Unless you can do some machining you may be better off paying someone to do what you want rather than relying on what you can find. If you can get a second screw in your flanges that may be as simple as it comes. Failing that, use one screw and Loctite.

I can drill and tap a second hole into the flange easily enough.  I'm glad you pointed out that bolting through the shaft isn't good as I was thinking about doing that.

I have used these taper locks + 10" V belt pullies on the two motor conversions I have done. All up cost around $US30
