Motor conversion to PM alternator
« on: May 17, 2012, 02:50:11 PM »
My first experience with fieldlines.com project help on a PM alternator was a success. Thanks again to all, especially Ghurd. Well, I am planning another model engine generator project, and I am back looking for some help. The last project has worked very well. A link for an updated video of this project is listed below. This project started with an 18 pole center rotor ceiling fan stator from an Emerson K55 motor. It has a 5.5" outside diameter stator core. My new project requires a smaller dia. stator, probably 4.5-4.75" diameter, but still requires a high pole count.

My question is, are there any smaller 120vac motors out there that are slow speed with high pole counts like the K55 motor? My guess is NO, but I wanted to ask the experts first.

I would look for an
1800 rpm three (3) phase motor
these type are very easy to convert
using only four (4) magnet sections

What about looking at direct-drive washing machines motors (e.g. LG)?  those are some high pole count AC motors. You'll find a lot of info about them in the backshed forum.

Cheers,

Octavio

PS: as coldspot stated, a 4 pole ac motor conversion is a good starting point also
