A wind turbine that used to suck
« on: September 17, 2007, 03:13:31 AM »
Yet another funky, yet ambitious idea from Mustang... I have several Kenmore vacuum motors. As I understand it the motor will generate AC power. I was wondering if I could use the motor to generate AC power for a battery charger, or if I would be better off converting it to DC power? Not to mention how big of a turbine could I use, although I'm sure you'll also need an idea of the average wind speed too. According to the Beaufort Scale I'd have to estimate an average wind speed of around 10 mph. with possible gusts reaching 40+ mph. Thanks for putting up with me yet again.

Mustang.

There are none so empty as those who are so full of themselves.

I expect that if you tried to make a wind turbine from such motors.... they'd still 'suck' ;-)

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Most vacuum cleaner motors are universal series motors that can run on ac or dc.

They are effectively dc series motors and can not generate ac. In real life they are virtually incapable of generating dc either and if they could the series connection makes them useless for battery charging.

To save a lot of frustration and wasted effort cut your losses now and forget the things. Dan is right they suck and cant do much else.

I'm glad to see that others share my cornball sense of humor... thanks for setting me straight

Indeed... they do sucks and cannot do much else
