Alternator wind generator.
« on: October 24, 2007, 11:56:43 PM »
Hi,

I am in the process of making a wing generator with a 63amp automotive alt.

I am using a 9 inch pully in conjunction with the alternator.

At first I will place 2 deep cycle 12vdc batteries in parallel and a 1000 watt inverter.(any other suggestion would be great this is just to see if I can do it for now)

my Question is What size wire do I need from the generator to the battery bank??

It will be 70' total in length.

Hi Mukluk, well, I dont think you will have much luck with a stock car alternator trying to use it with a wind geney, It just takes too much power to energize the alternator befor it will put out any useful amps.does Your user name impley that you live in the cold country? # 10 braded copper wire would work fine.

Thanks for the info.

No I live in PA

I saw plans for using a auto alternator for small applications.

field coil only takes a small amount of power to get things going..

even 2or 3 watts..maybe 50 watts for max field..

check out my pedgen files..

You give too little information to give any help.

It is probably likely that you will get very little from this thing and the loss in the 70ft of wire may be no big issue.

As others have said, auto alternators are not ideal for wind power. You give no idea of blade size or anything else so it is impossible to even imagine what you might get, but unless you use large blades and a suitable speed increase ( which you may be implying by mentioning a pulley)you will never see much out of it.

There is a lot of doubtful information out there and I suspect you have found some of it.There is information here about the problems of using vehicle alternators if you search.

I wouldn't spend any money on batteries or inverter until you can satisfy yourself that you can produce enough to justify the cost of them. Unless you remove the internal regulator that length of cable will reduce your output to negligible currents and cause overspeed problems.

Check out Ed's site windstuffnow.com.  He has the Ametek 38 on there for $50 plus shipping.  That would be a far better choice than an auto alternator.  Where in Pa are you, Mukluk?

I'm a newbie too, and just made a large post about this here:

I'm doing that now. I ripped the guts out of the alternator, bought a lathe and make new inards for it just like the example on windstuffnow
