your question may or may not already be answered (I have no idea what RTFM means)

but the clear answer to your question is 'yes'

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

Dan, RTFM means Read the f***g manual. However it would have been nicer to say "check the manual"

It is usually used in response to a lazy question that apparently was not researched at all.

I am quite certain that Trace has the answer in their Manual.

The question should be simply can it be used without grid, as any source can charge batteries.

ahh...  you learn something every day.

Perhaps we should be a bit nicer though - being a used unit and all perhaps the fellow asking didn't have access to the manual.

Xantrex/trace usually have there manuals to there products available online in pdf form. at least they always have whenever i have gone looking for a manual to one of there products. and even if you buy an inverter used, one that costs as much as a trace/Xantrex it would be prudent to find a manual to it and give it a read.
