where to start
« on: January 16, 2008, 06:11:30 PM »
I want to play around with wind power. i'm technically inclined, but not completely framiliar with electrical terminology and required components.  I've been searching the web for a good place to start.

I want to just run some experiments to understand how wind power works.  I have an old ceiling fan that i took apart and was wondering if i could use the motor to conduct the tests.

I'm in suburban chicago, so erecting some big mill is not an option, at his point i'm just learning to understand how it works.

so i'm looking for a couple of things:

Websites with Good DIY schematics or instructions for this type of experiment.

location to purchase inexpensive components for meters and converters.

Advice!

Thanks!!!

My $.02 ...

  1. start here:  http://www.otherpower.com/otherpower_experiments.html
  2. read the last year's worth of posts on the discussion board
  3. Get an Ametek PMM and some PVC blades

That's how I got started.  Good luck.

Ameteks are getting crazy... sorry, I mean "CRAZY", expensive.

Saw more than a few on eBay go for over $100 in the last few weeks.  And some were not very suited to wind!

Treadmill motors might be a more reasonable start.

Windstuffnow Ed might have some Ameteks left...

Just wondering what I could do. Since I live in the middle of the subs, I was wondering if there are plans for a turbine with a diamater of not more than 5 feet. (HOA from h*ll) I don't have acess to a lathe or welder. Please help

Hi, You've still got me beat, I am just outside of the loop.  Still, I have a bunch of solar panels and a two foot mini turbine on my roof, and some other sites with solar panels around town here.  I don't think your going to be able to put up a huge turbine in a suburban yard though.  You may find it interesting to build a few smaller mills from motors, or from scratch.  Rich

Why would one go to e-bay for ametek's when surpluscenter.com has them CHEAP!
