Magnets for the 10 Foot turbine
« on: February 05, 2008, 10:42:21 PM »
First project.

http://www.otherpower.com/turbineplans.html

I am making the Homebrew 10' Wind Turbine alternator and it required the N35 magnets. I have N42's, does this make any difference?

I was going with the 24 Volt machine with 1 strand of #14 gage wire and each coil having 70 turns.

Also I am trying the 9.2 feet and the 13.1 feet blades bought off ebay. Does any one have experience with these blades with this altenator?

Thanks

N42 magnets will be ok.

I don't know anything about those blades, they will probably have more influence than the change of magnet grade.

I expect that with the small ones you would have to increase the air gap a bit with the N42 magnets. It may take the larger blades, but I honestly haven't a clue about those blades.

Going to the stronger magnets could drive the blades into stall.  As Flux mentions a wider air gap might be necessary.  So why not design the alternator so that you could increase the distance between the rotor and the stator as you see fit.  Well, that might be hard to do 50 feet off the ground, but it's a thought.  So, you do the testing at ground level.

I think if you stick to the plan and run the 9 foot blades, but open the airgap up a bit so the cutin speed is between 140 and 150 it would be quite good (if the blades hold up)

I don't think it will work well with the 13' blades.  You need a  significantly larger alternator for blades that size.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.
