Opener disc blades for rotor

Anybody using Opener disk blades for rotors?

I checked with my local tractor supply and you can get 13" blade with bearings & such for $25 and they go up to 16".  Mild steel & 2mm+ thick.

My local scrap yard had a number of disk tillers just sitting there.  Probably could get the disks off without too much trouble.

 Those are a bit too thin for turbine rotors.

I thought of using cupped disks a few years back. They are thicker than the opener disks. Even with those I thought I'd be limiting the flux return path because of the metal thickness. How about two of them welded together? That might work.

When I started building gennys, I used the 'ag' bearings and shafts because I had a bunch lying around. That was a big mistake for me. The bearings nor the shafts were fit for anything above 100 RPM. They squeeled and made me think the blades were out of balance and it was going to fly apart at any moment...and it did several times.

 He would need to weld 4 together in my opinion.Sure if you got em for free but for a 100 bucks a rotor would'nt make sense to even me.

 I grew up on a farm and early on had the same thoughts has the poster.

Those discs are called "Colters", and are found on field plows and other tillage equipment.  It might be possible to stack a number of them, but you won't get the same results as using a solid piece of steel due to the microscopic air gaps between the discs, not to mention the effect of the paint.  That is, the magnetic flux will always tend to be stuffed along the disc just behind the magnet.  Saturation would be likely in that first disc.

Turns out I misspelled "Coulter".  Guessed wrong.  Anyway, I checked Agrisupply.com and found coulters 4.76 mm thick to be available.  Hope this is of some help.
