Treadmill motor for Chispito
« on: June 21, 2008, 06:43:16 AM »
After lurking around wind-power websites for many months now, I've decided to take the plunge and build something small like this. I've just now yanked the motor out of my old Nordic track treadmill, and I'm reading the label, and I'm not sure if I have the right kind of motor or not. Or what to expect from it. Info is as follows:

CW rotation

  1. 4 amps.
  2. 5 hp continuous duty @ 95 VDC

I know nothing (yet) about electric motors, but I'm guessing that this is about 1/3 the output of the motor called for in the Chispito plans. Is it worth it to continue with what I have? Or do I need to track down something else?

Also, there are two blue wires that come out of the unit (besides the red and black wires). I'm thinking these blue wires are part of the speed sensing system, and I can safely coil them up and out of the way. Yes? No?

Thanks.

Need to know the rated RPM.

Or spin it at a known speed and measure the voltage output, for 2 different RPMs is better.

I had a treadmill motor that had the same wire colors.

The blue wires were a thermal switch. Motor gets too hot,

it cuts the power. If that is the case for yours, just take

the switch out. You don't need it.

The best way to "kill time" is to work it to death!
