Energy from car to power home?
« on: July 06, 2008, 03:51:37 AM »
I've got an idea, not sure if it is new or not, or even feasible.

I'm a licensed contractor with working knowledge of home electrical.

Your site has caught my attention and I have been reading the posts to try to find something relating to my idea. No luck yet. Any feedback on the following thought (positive or neg.) would be appreciated.

Would it be possible to use your car alternator(as you drive)to charge a bank of batteries (in the trunk)and back feed a circuit into your home once you return. Some questions I have are: #1 Would the extra drain on the alternator and the extra weight of the bank of batteries negate the energy stored? #2 Could enough energy even be stored to be usable? This idea seems too simple, which usually means there is more to it. It would be something to have multiple autos storing energy during drive time and plugging them into your home to use when you need power the most.(when your home)

Anxiously looking forward to your responses.

Thanks, Bob in Michigan

Bob it has been done and probally still is but it ain't cost effective.

"Could enough energy be stored to be usable" er how far do you drive what capacity alternator do you have what size battery bank?????? It still would not be cost effective.

Honestly a bit of a worry from a licenced installer.

"feasible", yes.

Good idea, no.

Everyhing about it is bad, from using more gas due to #1, to wear and tear, to ruining the batteries in short order.

My experience says it would cost more in blue jeans than it would save in electric.

The batteries need maintained.

Battery acid is drawn to new jeans, like magnets to iron. "ghurd's law"?

all you would be doing is using your car as a generator to charge your batteries. Charging the extra batteries will put a Mechanical load on your cars alternator which uses up gas. It is cheaper to charge batteries from Grid Power than to charge batteries with Gas.
