Looking for motors
« on: July 25, 2008, 09:09:29 PM »
I know this has been asked a thousand times before and I did go through lots of old post before asking.

With that out of the way. I started builting a HAWT using motors from the place I work. They are 130VDC motors with gear reducers.  The problem I have found is that they don't produce much current less than .1 amps at 15VDC. I was wondering what motors everyone else is using and were can I get one?  I hoping to produce around 45 watts or more on a 12v system for charging batteries. Thanks for your help and expretise.  More question to follow I'm sure.

Anything with gears is bad.

Bigger is better. More so with 130V.

The 45W sounds like an Ametek-style TDM motor.  Too expensive now for what they are, IMHO.

Might look for 1/4 to 1/2 HP PM DC 90V motors.  More common and not bad to get your feet wet.

Speo did a couple tests, with photos.

Should give you an idea what to look for.

Be warned, 45W seems tiny, but it is kind of hard to get 45W from a small windmill and common off-the-shelf 'junk'.  I expect you need at least 3' dia blades, a motor about 3/4HP and plenty of good luck.

Bigger is easier.
