Any experience using glue to attach a bracket to a glass PV?
« on: September 09, 2008, 04:57:28 AM »
I have three BP970L 70w panels. They are 32 pounds each and 24 x 61. They are no longer produced by BP and there is no info on their web site about them. So, I have three options that I can think of:

  1. Try and find out if BP made something that would attach and find someone with said product.
  2. Build a frame.
  3. Use some sort of bonding agent to glue a bracket on the back of the panel.

My instincts tell me to build a frame for them and get it over with. But gluing something on the back would be so much easier I thought I'd ask. Online research suggests JB Weld or products that have to be cured with UV light. I would not attempt the glue route unless I hear from others that it really works. The panels are heavy and they will be mounted on a tall tower.

Any thoughts from others who have faced similar obstacles?

Thanx in advance - Mark

I built much smaller frames with extruded aluminum.

It may have been a sliding door track, possibly for a shower door?

It had a square 'U' with a tail.  The panels fit very loose in the U.

Squirted silicone in the 'U', put the pieces around the panel, used the 'tail' to connect the sides together and monunt the panels.

Butal rubber caulking may be better.

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know what others have done in the same situation.

I have 60 First solar FS-50 solar panels, they are all glass with 2 aluminum rails that are held on the back with a thick bead of clear silicone, and they are very strong.
