Unusual Stepper Motor
« on: October 23, 2008, 07:12:48 AM »
I recently ripped apart a flatbed scanner and got this very strange looking stepper motor that I would like to use to generate some type of power. I really do not care how much at this point as it was free;-)

Here are some screenshots:

It has 5 wires and although I can get small current from some wires I need help to see if anyone knows what wires I can put together to make the most current.

I am new to this stepper motor thing so please don't shoot me;-)

It is a fairly standard stepper.

Here is one way to do it,

And if you want to charge a few AA batteries in series, this works.

Thanks ghurd! I appreciate your help!

You provide the most help from anyone even on gotwind site;-)

newbies like me appreicate it.

In your pic it looks like you have diode running to each wire.

I thought that a diode cuts the voltage by about 1 volt for each one used...

Or maybe I am looking at it wrong and its not diodes.

anyway, thanks again. larry

LL?  I wondered.  Thanks either way.

They are diodes.  Schottky diodes will help (the voltage drop is less).  Usually the voltage is not the problem, low amps are the problem.

The stepper makes AC.  AC is not good for much at these kind of voltages.

Diodes are a necessary evil to make AC into DC.

DC is usable.

I would leave out the single diode between the battery + and -.  Personal choice.

The 'design shown' is Roger's and he uses it because he has no problem with enough voltage.  Inductance limits the output amps, so the extra diode won't hurt most/many steppers.

OT:  You understand the speaker thing?  Not all speakers are like that.

Rover posted a pic that may help.

It should look something nearly about like the right side in his pic when done,

only smaller!  :-)

I have been messing around with one to! Fixing the prop to the small shaft (.110) has been a pain. I used a small flared fitting for brake lines, filled it with JB weld and stuck it on the shaft, Its drying now!

Keep us informed of your progress

heh 800x600 images at 1.2 MB . . .

May want to consider using jpg, or find a better png compressor.

Not so good on wireless broadband either.
