Alternate Diversion Load
« on: October 04, 2009, 08:14:56 PM »
hi i have made 2 turbines now one a 12v turbine made from your designs and a 48v i made on my own. the 12v produces 1000 watts around 37-40 mph and the 48v produces 5000 watts at 40mph. i use tristar controllers. my question is that when it comes to diversion loads most people use water heating elements. ive used that on my 12v for my 48v i still have not got it completely hooked up yet because im wondering if anyone has tried using an electric stove heating element. i have alot of these ive done my conversion from the ac voltage to dc voltage out of the tristar manual trying to stay within the guidelines, but i just wanted to see if anyone has tried this and if they have what were the results cause this would be a good deal for my project.

Yes , Glenn from TheBackShed has a nice writeup on using heating elements for diversion loads.

here is the link.

I use a string of Dale non-inductive 120R/250w resistors.  The total string is 30R/4kw.
