Hi

after while, i thought of having hand's on experiance in converting a car alternator

N45 2"x1"x1/2" size,

if i have to get 500W+ at 150RPM, what could be the wire size i need to replace with?

  1. Field coil rotor replace it with 24 n45 magnets,on upperlayer 12 and in Lower layer another 12

  2. Remove the existing copper wire and replace it with new winding(you need to help in identifying the size and number of rotation)

Hi Sweetwind.

Sorry to give you bad news so close to Christmas but you'll never see 500 watts from any car alternator no matter what magnets or wire size mods you make at 150 rpm.

I would say the best you'll get is 5 watts. 500 watts at 150 rpm is going to be a much much larger machine.

Check my stories and diaries for all the wind tunnel and truck mounted tests I've done over the years on many difierant modifide car alternators.

I've seen 200 watts from a car alt at 30 mph around 1500 rpm.

try a truck alt--more room for wire-plus a bigger rotor..

heres one i did awhile back--maybe  #19 wire--40 plus turns..

18 coils--two nines...6 wires out..12 poles..

made a new rotor from a length of pipe-new shaft..

tried mag wire and plastic coated wire--mag wire far outdid plastic coated wire..

will rewire with more mag wire...

scroll down to --truck alt--

need to arrange my photos!!!

not sure what the dang thing would put out.[my drill could only handle 150watts]

more than a car alt-no dout..

still need to replace the plastic covered wire in it with mag wire..

it has two sets of nine in it...

one set is plastic coated wire -other mag wire..

been busy as of late--hopefully ile get back to it..

as you can see in the picts my mags are kinda small..

but as is i could most likley hit 300-400 watts on it ..

hooked to one of my pedgens[trying real hard]..

rewired with all mag wire it should make for a good windgen......

i did a car alt while back..used two alts of the same make..to make one alt..

doubled up on the stators[longer coils]-used both fronts of the alts

thats where the bigger bearing is-than put the doubled up stators in the middle.

worked out great...hooked to my pedgen-i could lite up 4 50watt 12v headlites

thats all the bulbs i had at the time...never flew it yet..my main test bed is down

for the winter[motorhome]....

check my files--car alt....my files are kinda frozen as of now-cant show them or even add.. :{

good luck.......
