Question - where to find motors
« on: March 02, 2010, 09:52:10 AM »
Living in Iceland makes it difficult to find used motors and it's very expensive to ship things to Iceland. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could find a good motor for a wind generator, that is in what kind of machines / household appliances I'm I likely to find one?

Many thanks...

The only 'common' item I can think of is brushed DC PM treadmill motors,

however very few are suitable.  The percentage of usable motors is small.

You may find something from a commercial conveyor system, possibly similar to a treadmill motor, or a very large servo motor.

Given the cost of everything else in the system (blades, tower, battery, wire, controls, inverter), US$45 shipping from the US is not so bad for something that works well.

Also, if you can not find something local, or someone who ships to Iceland, feel free to contact me.

I am selling off some of my extra motors.

It depends on how much power you are looking for and how fancy / creative you want to be.  As ghurd said, treadmill motors are nice if you can find one that puts out 12v at a lower rpm.  Maybe even large PM brushless DC motors, but they can be expensive.

Look closely at the trash and some day you will find something that is usable.
