ups batteries care
« on: March 03, 2010, 06:44:34 PM »
Hi everyone!

I just bought 2 ups batteries 7ah. They are being used in a toy electric car (power wheel type) and are charged by a windmill, with a ghurd dump controller keeping an eye on the volts at about 14.3v.

I know ups units use around 13.2v for a full charge.

Is 14ish volts ok for these batteries?

Thanks,

Opo

Finding the battery's data from the manufacturer is your best bet.  Without that, 14.3v is getting a little high unless you know for sure your meter is spot on.

I'd shoot for something closer to 14v.

Temperature makes a difference.  Here's some temperatures (f/c) and voltages for flooded lead acid from http://www.amplepower.com/primer/temp/index.html  Your sla will be lower voltages for these temperatures.

122/50     13.80

104/40     13.98

86/30     14.19

77/25     14.34

68/20     14.49

50/10     14.82

32/0     15.24

14/(-10)     15.90

(-4)/(-20)     17.82

A Google search for "battery charging temperature compensation" will yield a few hours worth of reading.

Here's a link to a pdf from xantrex.

This is still the best SLA battery primer I've seen. It's an oldie but a goodie!
