Anything I should salvage from an old CRT TV
« on: March 08, 2010, 10:13:49 AM »
I grabbed a small 13" CRT last week on the curb because I needed the power cord.

Before I go dispose of it at the recycling center, is there anything I may want to salvage in it for an eventual RE project?

cheers!

The degaussing coil [around the edge of the CRT] has a fair bit of fine enamelled wire AKA "magnet wire". The deflection yoke might have some also but usually not easy to unwind as it is covered to keep it from vibrating. The yoke is around the neck towards the screen end of it.

Most modern consumer goods are pretty useless for parts anymore.

Not like the old tube type with lots of beefy components.

Here it costs $25 to legally get rid of anything with a CRT. TV, monitor whatever.

If it is not too late,

Yes, the degaussing coil is very handy for test coils, or small projects.

The heat sinks.  Carefully grasp the device and heat sink with large Channel Locks, and delicately tear them out.  The semiconductor device is of no use.

I snip out most of the wiring harness.  Short wires of many colors can be handy.

I take out the deflection yoke for scrap copper, because TVs here still go into the land fill (not legal- but thats where most all end up).

I take the speakers too.  Not sure why. The coils and magnets are nearly useless.

(For Sale: 300 mismatched speakers?)

The semiconductors are mostly high voltage and low amps.  Useless for most RE.

Might find a small bridge rectifier, often not worth the effort required to remove it.
