700 watts
« on: March 31, 2010, 11:00:46 AM »
Hi again,

My question is, when using a vertical turbine what size rotor and swept area would I need for 700watts. I dont know the equation for this. I am looking to try making one out of 1' thick aluminum. My wind speeds are the trade winds here in hawaii so they range from 15-35 for the most part of the year.

Thanks,

Rob

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I worked this out using the formula on ed lenz's site based on a 15 mph wind it would be about 133 square feet of area.

What exactly would the 1" thick aluminum be used for?

Look again...foot, not inch. I suspect he means it's 1' wide though.

Hawaii;

Please be nice.

Your prior history is unimportant to us.

All we know of you is what you post.

So far I figured you for a 12 year old by your [lack of] language skills alone.

Fabricator is a doer. So far all you are is words in disjointed posts.

I use the .6*R^2*v^3 then multiply by .1 for the efficiency.  If I use 10m/s wind @ 700 watts, it comes out to 36.65 square feet total, so 18 sqft for each blade, which sounds about right to me.  But of course that is a decent sized vawt.
