5,000 registered users mark broken Today
« on: December 05, 2005, 07:52:06 PM »
Members and friends;

We broke what I think is an interesting milestone today on Fieldlines.

We now have over 5,000 registered users. Actual count was 5,001 a bit ago.

Not sure if we have any special gifts or anything for the person and I will keep the users I.D. private but I think it is GREAT that we are so popular.

I suppose now would be a good time for Dan to set up that "Pay Per View" access fee.

Ha Ha just kidding folks, don't lynch me!

Congrats! This board is way bigger than I thought.

But then, why do I always see the same people asking & replying? 1% of the people account for 99% of the traffic? Like the 20-80 rule, but even more extreme?

Now, if you start counting the lurkers, you will really become dizzy from succes :-)

Who knows, maybe somewhere in the very far future the guys here at otherpower/fieldlines may enter the historybooks as the forerunners of a new era. A small initiative that snowballed into .... Who knows?

Maybe #5000 should get a gold plated neo. Congrats on a great site guys. It would be kind of neat if home built mills were issued ser #s so that you could tell how many mills were generated from this forum.

Maybe a savvy geek could set up a "register your mill" website that allows users to add themselves to a database of home built units. Complete with pictures with a paragraph on the back.

Couldn't resist. Heard "Allison's Restaurant" yesterday.

Cheers.

I'm not in the least surprised that the site continues to grow, as it will.

Many people are finding it not so difficult to build their own renewable energy equipment and rightly so.

Its a wonderful site, but only as good as the very emminent and excellent contributors that use it and offer their time and help.

Flux, Zubbly are just a few of the names that spring to mind and many others who come in with help with just consists of one sentence, a sketch or drawing.

I must confess that I am seriously offering my services to take down data from all contributors and create an Excel page showing who has what, how big it is, its output and so on. Even the hints and tips on icing up of wind turbines was extremely interesting to read.

I will raise this issue afresh early in January 2006, but in the meantime if any of you have ideas on what useful details could be recorded please fly them on a different page.

Regards to all,

Dave HK

Congratulations Fieldlines/Otherpower! I'm not surprised either at the amount of traffic, and I am sure it will double again even faster. You guys deserve alot of credit for the users you have helped, be interesting to know how many Wind turbines are flying now because of this site.I know alot of them are flying because of help along the way from DanB, Flux, Zubbly, and lots of contribution from all the regulars as well! Good Job Folks and Thanks!

Cheers to all who have contributed to this site!

The valuable contributions made by the knowledgeable builders (and you know who you are) are helpful to both newbies (like me) and other experts in this field.  Wind power is a surprisingly underdeveloped industry, if you ask me, but with chemical energy sources rising in price, all proponents of wind, solar and geothermal energy are seeing a new crest in the use of Renewable Energy Sources.

More power to you!

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

Now, if every builder of windmills would put the 'www.otherpower.com' text on their tail, I think you may find that you will need to buy more bandwidth from your provider. When mine is finished, it will get that text!

Does this mean that you are now going to disable registered users on a rotating basis?  I mention this because when I checked my comments this morning, I was not able to respond to comments by  nothing to lose and ghurd.  My apologies to them.  Fellows, I guess the thread is dead.  And I so did want to make a comment about house wiring and inspections.

Wow 500 users if I remeber not to long ago a post about 3000 users?  But still wow like some others I stumbled across this site when it was the old board and I have had a look at my old postings.  So funny how I didn't know but now with this number of people registered its showing that people must be aware of R.E. and the need for it.  I hope the successes of this site continues :D:D

Well I joined last night

Hopefully I'll be a contributing member.

Admittedly I have a lot of questions though have beeing searching the archives.

Knowing how irritating it is to answer the same questions over and over.

I tend to take a simple approach to things such as heating . to quote "Scotty"

the more pipes in the plumbing the more they back up.

Being a scrounger as well as a poor country hick I learned long ago how to do with little. (found nice 6" discs on an old tiller 3 on each side . Cut the rivits on two to hold magnets and the tines on the third to hold blades. another plus is the the gear box has roller bearings i'll be taking the gears out and mounting it to pivot , providing an offset  as well as the support bearings for the main shaft)

oops I ramble sorry.

very nice site

Amazing stuff!

Why don't we all start a "Homepower" group in our own regions. Effectively most of the pioneers effectively have done this. I am thinking about people living in or near urban areas with large enough gardens or tolerant neighbours.

Has anyone done this already?

Congrats guys, ... it is nowadays nearly impossible to put a renewable energy term into a search engine and not to stumble about a link to the otherpower board. The best board on the net.

It's been a while since I posted.

To the Dan's.. Great stuff. Very Kewl Seminar in WI  (When are ya coming to Alberta to do one of those..??) - I'll buy the Beer.!

Anyway, I think it goes to show that there are a lot more people interested in this overall subject than the 5000 registered here. Given, IMHOP, that we as caretakers of this planet need to do something ourselves about pollution, greenhouse gases etc etc...this is about the best place to start on a personal level.  Forget the politicians...cause it's just that: Politics, again, imhop.

What little I have learned here, I believe, will stand me well in the future....When the kids are gone and off to school etc.  The plan is to hopefully live off grid or at least grid tie by using all three of the available resources:  wind, solar and if at all possible a neat little micro hydro set-up.  I suppose that is probably and arguably Nirvana to most..but I'm a gonna try to make it happen...that's the fun part.

I've built a small 5' mill & a 40W panel just to see if I could do it and as something to occupy my hands / mind in the long cold months of winter. I couldn't have done it without this site. And yea...these magnets can really hurt - I know by personal experience..!!  Kewl stuff though..keep it coming cause I'm watching/reading and learning.

A great thank you to all that contribute.

FYI: As a Tech Sales Rep in S. Ab for ESAB (Welding-Cutting-Automation), I meet a lot of people...when we talk small scale windpower or alternate energy, I always inform them of this site.

Rgds,

Theo - Calgary Alberta
