Blizzard of 2006 at Otherpower HQ
« on: December 22, 2006, 02:06:40 AM »
Our final total today was 44 inches of snow in the last 24 hours. A bit less than the blizzard of 2003, but when the snow gets this deep half a foot difference is moot!

Flash is somewhat perturbed about the chances of getting out of the windmill shop to relieve himself.

DanF's house. The 2 largest mounds are, hopefully, his vehicles.

Yes, the rain gutters are about to be swept away. I give it 48 hours max. Kodiak is in a safe spot, though.

DanB and his vintage Ford did a darn fine job busting out today--he got 1/4 mile to the county road and back, and even got 1/2 mile down the county road to bum some gas from a neighbor. The county snowplows never got all the way up here, they gave up 4 miles down the canyon because the snow was too deep!

This was our front page picture for awhile after the 2003 blizzard, that's Kodiak during that big storm. All our local dogs (and their human bosses) had this same problem early this morning.....

Cheers -- ADMIN

I can only pray we don't get a snow storm like that !  The last time I saw snow that deep I had to shovel the roof of my barn and replace the main support boards the length of the barn.  The barn covers about 1/2 acre.   Spent a week up there... Finally a friend brought his snow blower over and we hoisted it up on the roof, went fairly fast after that.

Good luck with it guys, I can't say I envy you in the least.. I hate winter with a passion but so far I can't complain about this one.

Actually - Im sort of envious... were supposed to have weather like that. I expect itll be mid 60's today and it's dry. We need some water up here.

DanB it is obvious you have been a good boy, I think you got what you asked for! Merry Christmas.

I love the sheetrock square next to the door The dod is a good indicator but that is a classic.

We haven't seen much snow round these parts in the last coupleyears, have about 1/2" of ice right now but it is supposed to turn over to all rain by morning. Last time I remember it snowing like that here was about 10 years ago. Guess you have the white Christmas.

Best wishes for happy holidays.

You know, it's actually pretty amazing that DanB got his truck down to the county road through all of that snow.  I wouldn't think my four wheel drive would make it through 44 inches of snow, let alone a pickup.  Once your down, you also have to figure that driving up-hill through the snow will be even more fun.  We had 20 inches or so here in '99, and I had a jeep cherokee then, and it did OK, but I think 44 inches would be more than pushing it, especially on the road up to your place.  I'd probably just try to dig my place out, make sure the neighbors were supplied OK and then work on getting transportation back up.  I'll bet there were more than a few sore backs around your side of the mountain.  It might make me add a backhoe onto my Christmas list.  Rich

I live in the U.P. (Houghton) and we had snow on the ground on Xmas day, but barely.  I'd hate to see that record broken (i.e. 100% probability of snow on the ground on Xmas).  For the record our total snowfall to date has been 69 inches, but it keeps melting.  Cheers!

I took my Ford Ranger on a trip that used the back ranchers roads in Northern Utah. My brother said he knew the way, so off we went with a case of beer and a full tank of gas to look at the great wilderness. We tried climbing over the mountain on the east side and the snow was going over the hood! Surprisingly it kept on going for about 1/4 of a mile. Then I had to back down a steep powdery road that dropped off almost like a cliff on one side, and was straight up on the other. Just one of the stupid things I did as reckless young adult. We were out in the middle of know where!
