IRC user information
« on: May 13, 2007, 02:51:12 PM »
Well, guys, I kept it going at this ISP as long as I could. For the last time the server rebooted on a power failure at my ISP. Considering I gave them a UPS to specifically avoid this and they seem to be using it otherwise I am going to eventually stop running it on this ISP. I have a couple other options but until Fink gets back from his trip to Guemes and fishing I cannot get the changes to addresses done. I am swamped at the farm with massive failures due to lightning while i was wasting time and money on vacation, so this was the last straw as it were.

Suffice it to say after several years of doing this and just depositing the checks for the user fees I am ready to retire to New Zealand and help Allan on his fruit farm. Maybe sneak over and see Bruce, too.

Usually by now the backup server would be running but I see it is not.

I have just run out my string on this and am tired of duct taping and wiring it together every time the ISP pulls a boner. I really wanted to keep this local to me but reliability is not very good so time to pack the tent and pitch it elsewhere.

Anyway, just a post to let folks know whats going on with that. I will run it as is until I get a new hosting option but reliability will not be there.

Cheers.

Well, it was a quick post before coffee so my bad. Those 2 have actually invited me multiple times. I figure they know they are safe because it is so far but soon my teleporter will be done and time or distance will not matter.

Probably could wrangle an invite from a few others as well but at the time I could only think of 2 off the top of my head.

Cheers.

Hey, TomW's teleporter works great, but get the version 2 model not the version 1.

I got one in 2005 on a trip with WooferHounds time machine. We tested a version one model with a few cats. Half of them came back inside out, but the version 2 model works perfect everytime.

I would not be against hosting the IRC on my server here at home. It is online all the time anyway and IRC isn't a big load, so, I would do it for you.

I'd need a bit of help getting it online . . .

Sorry, that graphic was from a user "electric ed". He hasn't posted in awhile so not sure if he could elaborate. Here is a link to his stories from the past:

I am not much of a builder and my policy is not to give advice unless I have hands on with the subject.  I don't think I could be much help.

try google and look for "brake drum alternator". They are built very similar to that picture with magnets around the outside and stator inside.

Cheers.

Its more or less an inside out motor conversion your working on.

The winding doesnt seem right though.Probably me.

If it's a 3 phase design you're working on you may want to stop right here right now.

You are making the same mistake as I've been making and Zubbly corrected me; check out these two pictures:

http://www.anotherpower.com/gallery/zubbly/impropercoilplacement

http://www.anotherpower.com/gallery/zubbly/8polepropercoilplacement

The way things look in your picture you're not building a 3phase system but only half of a 6 phase system (and no, that's not the same).

Regards,

hello Vawtman, been to hot to work outside or in the shop so i have been playing with some toys on the dinning table. one of the fans had a set of laminates with 36 slots like a motor so i skewered them and rewound with eleven turns #14 for a total of 18 coils in 6 coil groups of 3 coils each for a 3ph layout. a rotor laid out with 12 poles of side by side 3/4x3/4 round magnets (two per pole) works out to look exactly like the picture in tom's file.

i was hoping he could help me with the coil wireing and hookup. if you, are any of the others can help, it would be great. thanks pepa

hi Peter and thanks for the heads up. with twelve poles, it looks just like the picture that i gleaned from tom's file. if it worked for that one, i need to know the difference between that one and mine. they are both radials. thanks again pepa

The picture shows an 'overlapped' 3 phase winding, basically put a single phase winding of 12 coils in series spanning 3 slots, then add in two more identical windings into the two leftover slots in the middle of the coil legs. Then treat each of these windings as a phase... Thats how I understand it.

If it is already done, you could try Jerry-Rig.  Each phase goes to its own bridge. The bridges outputs are combined, then go to the battery.  A rewording of what fungus said.

As with Delta, it will need more RPM to reach cut-in, but a ways past cut-in could make good amps due to less resistance.

Ghurd, thanks for the input, the stator is wired into the three coil group, with six coil gtoups, in thirty six slots, nothing tied togather yet. the magnet pole will just fit inside the coil hole, or inside coil span. pepa.

coil 1 1111_1111

coil 2  2222_2222

coil 3   3333_3333

magnet    mm

Pepa,

Ed has a very good page here: http://www.windstuffnow.com/main/3_phase_basics.htm

This should help to unravel the mysteries of the phases.

thanks Oztules, i have made a printed file and that page is in my file. my problem is trying to figure out why peter said it would not work, i must be missing something because i have built a few three phase machines but not motor conversions. until this project i have had other peoples work to follow but i can not fine any good layouts for a radial.

i found a picture in tom's file that was what i needed but no wiring follow up. the picture came from electric ed's files so i spent several hours reading and looking at his files and he talks abour rhe radial but not the wiring. most of the breakdrum radials have overlapping coils and mime has slotted lams. pepa

Pepa, Looking at your wiring photo, you have only 1 leg in each slot. This will give you half the coils that the picture in the file from toms has ( if that is the diagram above)

If you look closely at the inset (inside the magnified circle bottom left) you will notice that each slot has two (2) coil legs per slot. I think you have only 1 coil leg per slot.

Peter was pointing this out, as well as the fact that the second phase needs to be reversed ( i think this is what he was getting at anyway). The leg spaces (which should have been used by the next coil)could have been used by a further three phases to make a 6 phase winding. You seem to have spaced the coils out to every second position and left the intervening one out.

For 36 slots with a three slot coil width you should have 36 coils (12x3slots per phase if you use toms diagram as a sample), you appear to be ending up with 18 coils(6x3 slots per phase)which is half the coil count you are trying to emulate....... did I mess this up, or does it make some kind of sense??

It will still work, but not as well as a filled three phase I would suspect. It is really half of a 6 phase design.(the other missing 18 coils would make either the other half of a 3 phase design, or the second three phases of a 6 phase design.

I'd better stop now and wait for help from Peter, I think I might be complicating this instead of simplifying it..

May have been good to do a single wire test scheme and test your winding combinations and see which was best for that stator.
