Kurt;

Well the power dipped here again, and, as usual the irc died.

This problem will go away as soon as I get DanF to swap the DNS and link stuff at the fieldlines data center.

Anyway the test server is up yet, I think.

IP # there: 62.129.141.65 which seems to be where the irc.anotherpower.com address points to.

ya i went ahead and pointed the irc.anotherpower.com dns to the new server when the old server went down seems as how it was avalable and not realy doing anything. it seemed a better option than borrowing rossw's bandwith agean.

Maybe its a Linux issue. Have you tried switching to a Microsoft based system?

hehe.

Sorry Tom, couldn't help myself.

If it were a M$ system, it wouldn't be, "IRC is down again. . ."

it would be, "LOOK! IRC is UP AGIN!!! QUICK, before it goes down again. . .!"

Now, fellows, it had nothing to do with the OS. Simple physics. No electron flow, no active electronics. Not even my Mac can run without electrical power, and, as far as I am concerned, Mac beats both of those hands down. [Drum Roll with cymbals]

The problem is pretty much cured just need to do some minor DNS type stuff and it will be on servers where the folks operating the hardware care about reliable services.

Cheers.

As I had suggested in the IRC, it should be possible to set irc.otherpower.com to resolve from irc.anotherpower.com,(CNAME) since the anotherpower domain is much easier and quicker to change it seems. There are also more than one person able to make the changes when or IF it's ever needed again.

Wolv;

Yeah, and I told you to talk to DanF about it because he is the one who has to actually do the changes I would just have to repeat anything you told me on how. It would probably be a good idea but having seen what happened in the past when the individual in control of the DNS got upset it seemed best to attach it to the fieldlines domain. Its not like this whole IRC thing was a well thought out plan, it just kind of morphed into what it is over time. Maybe we need to snag our own domain for it? Something like OPIRC.org, or otherpowerirc.org or .net or .com?

The difference between a 2 minute timeframe for a DNS update and a 2 week wait would have obvious benefits.

Frankly, I don't really care one way or the other how it is done but now it seems to be a lot of waiting for changes that could be seamless. Maybe you can contact DanF and figure it out?

Cheers.

My bad, it was Kurt that mentioned that DNS idea was tossed around one evening when I was away. And I told him it would be best to talk with DanF as he will be the one doing it.

No insult intended mistaking you for Kurt.

Cheers.

well Danf is a hard man to get a hold of. i do not have a current email address or anything for him. and besides if we contacted him about changing the DNS for your server without you giving him  a heads up he would likely ignore us.

I have no plans to ever seize control of the irc via the domain :)

But on that, The entire intent for registering the anotherpower.com domain was to allow as stable as possible domain for the irc and it's gallery to live, do what you wish.

However the reason for the suggestion of CNAME leaves ultimate control still with Danf if ever I, or anyone else capable of manipulating the anotherpower.com domain went insane or something. Some sort of balance of powers I suppose. As I pointed out also this setup then allows for much faster easier changes to be made using irc.anotherpower.com as its pointer.

It's up to you, Danf, irc users, or whomever, I'm just offering up the possibility.

Wolv

ps I agree, contacting DanF is hard. I hope Kurt has better luck than I.

Never has nor ever will be a charge for IRC use.

Try irc.anotherpower.com that server is up n rockin for 32 days non stop. This whole thread has just led to more confusion and has helped no one.

Cheers.

willib, not all browsers support irc. Mozilla and Opera are two that do (Explorer does not). You need an irc client. Try MIRC
