« on: December 12, 2007, 10:05:58 PM »
I am truly sorry. I want to blame Scoop but it was probably my fault.

The story delete button doesn't ask for confirmation it just kills the story. I was trying to "preview" and hit the wrong button.

In case you missed it, I am truly sorry.

Its a good thing I am not your neurosurgeon.

Regrettably.

scoop is the name of the board software that makes the message board a message board and not just an empty page on the internet.

Did you ever take those weird association tests in high school?

Scoop is to phpBB as sheet is to:

A) Horses

B) Shinola

C) Chocolate cake.

The correct answer is... C.

We live in a beautiful world. Please God let our forum reflect that.

Volvo;

I suppose you are correct and I tend to agree. Sadly, it is not likely to change, so I guess I don't see the point in slamming it so much?

Its really too bad that it [Scoop] has never been used to its full potential here. It was dropped in with little or no customization, then it was butchered in an attempt to lighten its server impact.

It all adds up to a horribly crippled forum software that we get to live with for the foreseeable future.  Editorial maintenance isn't much fun, either. Like most stuff computer related "up the mountain" any changes will take forever and a day if you can convince someone it needs to be changed. As long as the shopping cart works no effort gets expended to do anything related to online resources.

This combination of facts makes bashing it nothing much but an exercise in futility.

Kind of like laughing at that retarded cousin who finds cow pies appetizing. It is probably funny but he can't change it and does not understand why you are laughing. We all get to have our opinions and this is mine.

Just the facts as I see them. I assure you, it pizzes me off more often than it does you.

Cheers.

Despite other's opinions, I think this board is the greatest there is for DIY RE and related topics. I am glad I found it. Maybe it is butchered. Maybe it doesn't do everything it is supposed to do. But, I am of the opinion that newer isn't always better, and easier is always best. You can add all the wonderful features (that few people will ever use) and clutter the thing up beyond usability, or you can leave it simple, fast, smooth and get the info out there. After all, it is about the content inside, not the beauty of the presentation. I'd much rather see the content than look at a cluttered overstuffed interface. JMHO - YMMV

Complaining about it's shortcomings won't do much for it except to make the ones who own it to quit being the samaritans they are and making this wonderful resource available for the great, low, low price of. . . FREE.

It is great!

To the board owners, Thank you!

And to SCorman, Shhh. . .it happens! Please repost your submission. I'll be looking for it. . .

I don't think it would be that difficult for us to install new / more modern board software.  I've thought a lot about this lately - be interesting to at least discuss that/get opinions about it.  It may (or may not)be easy to include all the stuff thats here in scoop on it.... but we could always leave this old board here as an 'archive' and disallow posting.  (so then we'd have a link to the 'old old' otherpower board, and the 'old' otherpower board....)

I like how this works and looks.  Maybe I'm just old.

I can never figure out other boards...  Everything is jumbled together.

One post has 5 questions, then 10 comments, and an answer of "yes" shows up at the bottom.  "Yes" to what question? Means nothing to me.

Other ones have to copy paste questions over and over to make replies at all meaningful.  Stuff gets so long it takes multiple pages.

Yet others are so jumbled I can't find the same topic a day later to get a part number or link someone posted.

(Sorry Tom.  I do understand it is labor intensive.)

Golly, Dan. You mean like cutting the payroll by 80% or 90% ?

I always figured you paid those dogs too much anyway.

Maybe time to get into hard core manufacturing of turbines so you guys can continue that high end lifestyle up there.

I am sure Rich and George are just itching to get a town job and all the joy involved with that.

If those guys were about 850 miles closer I would hire them to assist with getting this turbine up since the snow has put the brakes on for me alone.

Cheers.

Sorry to hear about the loss, but I'm with ghurd on this subject.

I think this site is great. I find it user friendly and I'm amazed at all the techno info that has accumulated over the years.

If a user is serious about completing a RE project, a google search will provide time/money saving information, allowing the user to learn from fellow users mistakes and success.

In my case this site was heaven sent... Thanks to all who make it possible! JB

Ghurd, you probably don't wear shorts for the same reason that I don't:

It would drive all the women crazy and make all the men jealous.

So, no matter how much I like to wear them, I figure I owe it to society not to. After all, we have a responsibility to others. No matter how much we like tanned legs ourselves.

Peter.

I have contacted the powers at be here on at least 3 occasions and offered my services to install a good message board, it's what I do for a living and I will be willing to offer my services at no charge to all involved.

Without threads being bumped to the top by new posts, the readers and followers are missing alot here and stunting the growth of this community, IMHO.

Let me know...here to help.

Just out of curiosity, whats the software you would recommend as a candidate?

I don't really have a say in it but I would be interested to know.

2 other forums I frequent use vbulletin and they seem pretty user friendly. Seem to have fair search ability, etc. Never admined vbulletin myself, tho.

Cheers.

phpBB3 was just released, GPL (Free) and would make a good candidate.

Problem is always and would be in this case keeping old posts and archives active within the new platform which can always be done by writing one-off dirty code to transfer that data..which is easier said than done but do-able.

Maybe just keeping an old board to link to and relying on the posters here to copy and paste all their information that they think is important to the new board would be a good start...scoop has seen its day long ago..this site has stifled its growth potential by using it.

Green is huge and getting bigger everyday, this is one of the best sites around but without a good platform it might lose its ground in the community.

Hooray!

From what I have read in this thread, a lot of people are resistant to go to a "flat" type of forum, which is the nature of phpbb. I cut my teeth on Usenet and also liked the old "threaded" type of forum, which is what Scoop seems to emulate. There are advantages to a threaded forum, it's neat to watch threads spin off the original post and some coherency is maintained of the discussion. Flat forums are a different animal. I had a really hard time getting used to flat forums but once I did, I much prefer phpbb to any other forum software I have seen.

Probably 80% of my internet time is used browsing forums. Four or five of the forums I visit use phpbb. It's almost becoming an internet standard and people will come here already knowing how to use the bbcode to insert images, quote previous replies, make avatars, etc.

Believe me, I used to be an old-school forum guy. Text only, if you please. We don't need no stinkin pictures, what's an avatar?, no stinkin yellow smileys for me.

I have changed my tune.

Here is what I believe is the crux of the matter. Broadband is becoming the standard. Limiting pictures to 150k is an admirable goal, in a world of dialup users, but hardly anyone has a slow connection anymore. I swear, I held out till the last. I've NEVER had a windows XP system, still using 2000, if that's any indication of my mentality, but I finally got broadband about 18 months ago. limiting picture size to 150k is 2002 mentality.

Another thing... Why do you think places like facebook and myspace are so popular? I think it is because people are allowed to express their individuality through pictures and music and videos and all the other neat stuff broadband internet has to offer.

I was incredibly frustrated about a month ago because I wanted to quote someone in my sig and the quote was over 150 characters or something and I couldn't use it, because of Scoop. I want to be able to express my individuality here with pictures and quotes and yellow smileys. I want an avatar, I want a sig, I want to be able to EDIT MY POSTS for spelling and grammatical errors if I catch them right away.

This place can hang onto Usenet standards if it wants to, but look what happened to Usenet. I believe if it's not dead, Google groups has it on life-support. Maybe just the fact that there's great information here will continue to draw new viewers. But what if some of the guys who post the great information here toddle off to more fertile grounds? Avatars and sigs and flat forums and pictures over 150k can be fun. I want to have fun in here.

There are still many with poor dial-up only. They tend to be RE users on the end or past the end of the last wired phone lines. I would hate to loose those folks who either need renewable energy are using and building it.

As much as I hate to agree with you, I must. That was the main justification in size limits. I think it is still valid today.

Much rather have a few folks not getting to post their 4 meg sig photo than one user not able to use the site due to bandwidth restrictions.

After all, its the "off grid" types we want to help and they also are the ones most likely to be using can and string internet.
