ADMIN alert -- Board problems cropping up
« on: December 28, 2007, 05:18:01 PM »
As your ISP always says when you call them, "We are aware of the problem and are working hard to restore service for our valued customers."

Current problems include:

  • Internal Server Error when trying to log out. (Windows XP, both IE and Firefox)

  • Permission denied when posting. (Windows with IE7 only)

The odd part is that I could not reproduce these errors on my office computer (Linux, Firefox) but was able to do so on my Windows machine.

SO -- hang in there and thanks for your patience! If you are having problems and CAN post, please reply with your browser and OS info. If not, email it to us:

Email the Board ADMIN.

Im using XP.  The only problem I've encountered is when going to fieldlines site it gives me an error, like it couldn't find the site or the site wasn't available.  Usually a couple clicks on the refresh button gets me here.  Other wise everything else seems to operate fine...

Echoing windstuffnow's sometimes can't find the site, but other than that, no problems with Firefox and XP for me.

I will hold off going to IE7 unless I have to for whatever reason.  If I need to use IE I can usually just use the Firefox IE mode plugin.

Windows XP & Vista, IE 6.0 and 7.0.

The only problem I encounter is the same the others did, occasionally it seems like you server is offline. Refreshing the page usually fixes the problem but there were occasions when this lasted for like 10 minutes while I was refreshing in the same time.

I checked other pages meanwhile as I suspected this is ISP related but all went well so I guess there could be a problem in your backyard. This only affected the fieldlines board, www.otherpower.com seemed to respond.

I hope this helps.

I often see the same, its almost as though the server is occasionally slow to respond, or its a dns issue. On both WinXP and Unbuntu, I dont think the OS or browser ( or anything at the clients end ) is the problem. Could be a routing or dns issue the more I think about it, it happens as soon as you click on a link, so I dont think the server is even polled, but the dns server is saying it cant find your site in its ds records. Like the others say, refreash a couple of times and it comes good.

But I dont think this is your problem today. I tried the logout button, it did work but was very slow, took over 10 seconds. This may be a permissions thing on the database.

Using XP pro and IE7 at work.  Sometimes can't find page as if server is offline.  Started only last week.

Using XP home and IE6 at home. I haven't had the problem at all.

The well complained of "top of hour bug" anywhere between :00 and :10 of every hour you can get either failure to respond, timed out or empty pages. The ads get thru, of course on the blank pages so that may be a clue. Lots of the IRC guys get this so its not just a few.

In general it is dog slow passing pages all the time. The other stuff like shopping cart and static otherpower pages come right up any of these times I get slow responses or top of hour bug. Not to bitch, but you asked.

Cheers.

You should have something in your Apache error log. You're getting nothing at all?

I think that is has something to do with the high traffic sometimes.

Earlier I had a slow broadband connection with my machine. Sometimes, quite seldom I could not get the connection, the message was only a blank page or 'the connection timed out'. Nowadays I'm using a slow wireless (about ten times slower than my previous broadband) connection (gprs) and the problem is now more frequent. My operating system is Debian GNU/linux. Sometimes I've used the board with my friends' Windows machines with firefox and quite fast broadband connections. I haven't seen any problems with them.

I quite frequently get moments when I can't connect to OtherPower at all.

I think that some of these are caused by DNS problems for this board, not by the machine at all.

I think that some of these problems are also caused by poor routing from where the server is hosted to the rest of the Net.

The above could be related.

I believe that I rarely see problems if I am able to make a connection to the server at all.

Like most of the other I have had the odd time I get server unavailable, but that happens with other sites too, I wonder if the ISP puts the server 'on-hold' while they are taking backups or other maintenance activities.

So, if you can read this I can post using Firefox under Win/XP on an laptop so old I think it might be steam driven :).

Cheers

Seems like everyone is taking Winblows problems

Conversely, I'm running 64 bit Linux with Firefox and have only seen this error once

Same problem as windstuffnow says "like it couldn't find the site or the site wasn't available" (using WinXP and Firefox).

Also I have posted single diary entry "My first motor conversion" a few days ago. But I cannot see it listed in "Your Diary" section. I think I have seen it there before, but not now.

winds;

Yes, I saw that Diary post and I can't find it under your diary? It has a few comments on it, also. I did find it in the admin area story list and it is set to display in section like it should so I am not sure what happened there the I have no idea why this happens?

http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2007/12/24/134953/33

I can't find my own Diaries from awhile back and I know whats in them and that they were posted.

That sucks because there was a lot of good hands on data in those.

Yeah scoop has become decrepit and senile or something. Time to take it out back of the barn and put it out of its misery, IMHO

Cheers.

Tom,

I've had the same problem once with one of my diaries. No idea what happened. In the end, I made another 'dummy' diary with nothing else but a link to my 'lost' (but still present) diary:

Admin;

Got the same error of "page cannot be displayed" this morning, even after logging in.

Did a quick check of different OSes.

List:

XP using MYIE2 "error"

Win 95 using FF "error"

Win 98 using Opera Error"

Win2k using IE6 "Error"

Mandrake 7.5 using Netscape "Error"

SUSE 10.x using built in "Error" This is a load going through VMware loaded on a Red Hat box while trying out ice and fluxbox displays.

VISTA too unsecure for our office usage at this time:-]

there's a few more but the same error seems to occur.

We have a Cisco certified person here in our IT group and he took a look at what was going on out the world of I-net.

It may not be the "scoop" problem even though it may look like it.

We saw several of what we call "bounce backs" before we were able to get a page to display. We pinged the "offcial" IP address, hope no one mined too much ;-)

and it answered right away.

I would be asking a few questions of the "hosting" agent. Like what backend software/hardware is being used. Is the backup software a "snap-shot" style or SAN style unit and if the redundant units are "live" or spinup when needed.

We are using most of an OC3 unit so I know from the office we're not bogged down like I could be at home on DSL, which strangely enough I hardly ever get the "error", we use at home Vector SOHO mostly so and I don't have a system at work with it on there so can't say for sure about it or the timing.

Could be that the routers or hosting software just needs a good reboot:-) or a memory chip starting to hang a bit here and there.

Hope this helps. a little

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
