alternator to magneto?
« on: April 10, 2006, 01:50:33 PM »
This is a question for some of you generator guru's. Is it possible to add magnets to the outside of a alternator housing (located at the coils) and generate a small amount of electricity (firing a spark plug)?

The housing(stator) looks like this--

The rotor looks like this--

The case cover (aluminum) has enough clearance for about 3/8" thick curved magnet and what I have noticed on the 'magneto' ones(dynamo?(snowmobile)) is that they have magnets rather than field coils.

something like this--

except outside the housing.
