Motor was chucked into a Rockwell Multispeed drill press with a 1 1/2 hp 1725 rpm motor                           

The load was four 1 ohm 200 watt power resistors series or paralleled as needed                           

The speeds were changed using the multi ratio drive pulleys-


 The 535 RPM designation on this motor must be a typo-

I am going to use this motor for charging my 48 volt bank, It should be perfect

the best power out is at 53.6 volts which is great for a 48vdc bank.


Any suggestions for a prop diameter / pitch ?

I sure hope that 535 rpm is a typo error. The way i interupt your chart that guy is going 2156 rpm to get up into 48 volt charging range. That is spinning right along. Did It get pretty hot. Just a wonderin.  Thanks for the test. JB

JB,

We only had the motor under load for about a minute at each speed and resistor setting. We had no apparent generator heating. The load resistors however were not so lucky , they were cooking. The generator had brush noise at the higher current levels, thats why there is no voltage reading for .5 ohms and 2146 rpm ,we did not want to kill it. When we had more than 25 amps the motor would make a whining / squealing noise. The unit did make 67 volts no load at 1725 rpm so it would charge a 48volt system but it would have to be at alower current level than we tested at ,probably 9 or 10 amp at 1725 would yield 450-500 watts. This test pointed out to me that this unit (and maybe others) has a sweet spot for current and it's max delivered power output. at 1 ohm at 860 rpm, 2 ohms at 1246 and 1725 and 3 ohms at 2146. The current at these spots are in the 17+ amp range.

I am going to need to charge my 48 vdc system with this unit, I think I will need to gear up the unit to get the charging volts I need or do a dc to dc convertor and optimumize the input current at about 17 amps and the output to whatever voltage the the bank needs  to draw 17 amps at the input voltage.

What sort of blade design would might give me the speed I need for this. Are there any blades that will turn 2000 Rpm?

Here's so wind test #s I got from a 130 volt tred mill motor. This is a 17.6 amp, 3,000 rpm motor. This is a 12 volt test and i agree with you. I think threse motor are better suited for low volt use.



  1. mph 2.5 amps
  2. mph 5   amps
  3. mph 10  amps
  4. mph 15  amps
  5. mph 32.5 amps It made a big jump at 30 mph. This was at 14.5 volt or 471.25 watts.


This is on a par with the AIR-403 and a pinch better and no noise.  I was using a 3 blade 49" tip to tip Mike mod Jerry blade.


I'm testing a 1 HP 3 phase motor conversion tommorow. This is a 48 volt genny now. Look for the results on a post above.


I can light a 100 watt 120 volt bulb with a stout twist of the rist on this one. You might concider this for your 48 volt charging. I've left the wire stock but low voltage. Each phase says 3.4 amps X 3 = 10.2 amp at lets say 56 volts will be 571.2 watts.


This shouldn't be a problem for this motor to handle. It was orignally designed to opperate at 2,000 watts as a motor.

 Good Morning. Im not too sure about 2000 rpm for a blade. That is zippin right along a little higher than I would be confortable with. When I read your test originally I was thinking about Jerrys motor conversions before his post. Ive done 2 of them. 24 volts is not a big problem but 48 might be. I was thinking maybe a 6 pole 1075 rpm  motor conversion  might be something to consider but 48 volts is still asking quite a lot. Im not real keen on a gearup systym though. 3 years ago I thought that was the ticket but not anymore. JB

Good mornin JB


I use a 6 pole 1075 rpm 3/4 hp on my exersize bike and I fly one on my store roof.


It makes 48 volt charging quite posable. On the bike I can light a 100 watt 120 bulb fairly easy and I've pedled the bulb to 150 volts.


I've left the 6 pole wiring stock for high volt out put. In other motor conversions I perelell the 6 coils rather than leaving them in (stock) siries. This is for low volt use.


This motor toped out at 80 amps this way (50 mph) but was not as good on the startup amps as the Garbogen.


Thats why I've put more effert into the Garbogen. 2 less magnets and a littel better startup. Theres more 10-15 mph wind than 50 mph wind. Here atleast.


3 phase ac motors are typicaly 220/440 volt motors. Justwire them for 220 volt and they'll do good as 48 volt chargers.
