FYI: Why the site is so slow
« on: August 27, 2004, 07:44:24 AM »
There is a reason the site is slow, if people are wondering. It's called "slashdotted" (./ed), it's a news site with many visitors. If a link to a site is putthere, if often causes bandwith problems, and makes the servers "choke":

The news article about the hamster light:

Yah.  I posted to let the /.ers know that Skippy was missing, presumed dead.

Dan, I hope your bandwidth bill isn't too high this month.

bandwidth throttle lifted

Hello all.

When we got Slashdotted at 4AM today, the bandwidth spike initially looked like a distributed denial of service attack, so the folks who handle our security issues throttled back our bandwidth for a while in case it was an attack. Once we found out it was Slashdot, they've taken the throttle off; so though the site is still slow, it seems to be performaing better now.

You wouldn't believe all the emails we are getting about the dang Hamster....
