New to the board
« on: April 01, 2005, 08:18:19 AM »
Hi All,

Just found this board and decided to join. I am a longtime RE and AE enthusiast and tinkerer but am mostly involved with Electric Vehicles these days. Would love to build a low speed neo mag alternator soon for a wind gen project. Awhile back, I picked up a few Trace inverters intended for the overseas market and have been thinking of tinkering with one of those for lighting and other non freq critical apps to help cut my bill until things settle down enough for me to build my complete off grid system. Hope I live that long, lol. Located in Phx Az and do welding and fabrication work, among other things I have an E-bay business devoted to selling off the excess Fine Junque that I seem to accumulate at too high a rate to be believed. Hope you guys can put up with me, not much of a lurker, I tend to participate on subjects of interest to me.

Welcome aboard! You've found the perfect site for reference, help or just share ideas. You mentioned Trace Inverters, I'm in the market for a 48 Volt if you run across one cheap. Are you building an Electric Vehicle? Or just researching?

I'm reasonably new to this board as well (under a month), but I'll roll out the welcome matt as well!!

As for the electric vehicles, I would really like to talk with you about that, as I've been researching that for over 4 years now and am seriously looking to get started on a conversion.

And again, I'd like to extend my offer of free web hosting for images and/or pages.  You can e-mail me at darrin.moore@gmail.com if you need anything.

Hi to all and especially gratified by the welcome given. I will try and answer the queries in this one posting that people posed, if I miss anything feel free to post a question or e-mail me directly. On the Trace inverters, all I have right now are a few NIB 230v 50 Cycle Tiger Series export units 24V input that I am selling for $100.00. They would be good for lighting and such non frequency sensitive apps. They might even be hackable, havn't opened one up but I did sell a couple to a fellow that did and he seemed to think they were set up from the factory to do so. Like I said, don't know for sure and havn't heard back from him. On my E-bay site, I do electronic salvage and surplus so 48V 115v x 60 hz units could show up at any time. I am always looking for RE stuff to sell but seldom have a chance to buy right. I do have LOTS of hi-power DC stuff that I havn't had time to list, BIG inductors from industrial welders, small to big contactors, variacs (handheld to large 3ph chain drive), some small DC-DC converters, and lots more aircraft stuff.

On the EV front, I have had many EVs in the past and I currently (pun intented) own 2 onroad EVs (1991 Conceptor G-Van and a `76 Sebring Vanguard Citicar) and have 2 Lectra EMBs acquired in pieces that I am slowly building. Working on a drag bike for the 24v NEDRA class as well. If that isn't enough, I just acquired a mint Meyers Manx or Tow`d body that I am seriously considering building as an EV. I have a friend that wants to underwrite the project, am considering starting it as soon as I finish a half dozen other things, meanwhile will just look to acquire parts. Need a frontend, pan for a jig to fabricate new chassis, IRS stuff. I do custom fabrication and classic vehicle work for a small clientele of old car enthusiasts and the occasional piece for EV guys to help with their conversions. As I get a bit more time I will post some EV links for people to follow, lots of great resources on the net. I would appreciate a hint where to post links best, I see this forum has a diary function, maybe there?

PS, I need a short piece (8-12") of Schedule 5 4" aluminum tubing to make a new motor casing for the drag bike motor. This is apparently a std size but have not had much luck finding any locally or on the net. Maybe not looked hard enough or in the right places, but I am hoping one of y`all has a chunk just taking up space. Please e-mail me if you have a piece to get rid of.
