Did it run before you took it apart...on AC or DC...and how much voltage speed ...etc.

Is there a layer of Aluminium over the rotor? I would say AC inducing currents in th alu might make it run but I have never seen one of those.

I took motor apart..., with worm reducer. Voltage unknown.

The case of motor - Al. Rotor is not magnetic, Al and Ti. Stator - Fe! It has two windings, 54 and 240 Om.

Low mass, low inertia armature?

I remember seeing one of these things, or a similar one anyway, a few years back at an engineering surplus auction. Dad and I couldn't work it out, either. The guy doing the 'look-around' bit of the auction said it came off the back of a BIG clock. Like you get in rail stations or clock towers, I suppose.

Yes, low mass, 15cm, 11-12g!  (rotor)

Not to a clock. From the unknown scientific device...

I was thinking of a device that needed to rapidly change speed and /or direction.

how many wires does it have?

Two things come to mind.

Either something else drove this or the insert was for shipping/storage.
