I would like to make an important note on posting of images. I have done a series of tests on servers to verify my results, feel free to do so yourself to confirm my findings.

The only real factor of any importance when posting an image is not the size of the image but the size of the file. The bandwidth does not change whether you use image tags or not. Image tags are only a courtesy factor.  

The file size increases with the image resolution and it is resolution that eats bandwidth.

When an image is being transferred over a network, the file size is directly related to the elapsed time needed to deliver the image.

I have posted images on this server that where 60K jpeg lowres only to have them removed by the admin. Not because the file was large, I believe it was removed because I forgot to specify image tags to contain the image, which would not have changed the bandwidth nor the load time.

Just because an image looks large does not mean that it is large. image tags can increase/decrease the size of the image but does not imcrease the bandwidth, only the file size and resolution does this.

I see meny high resolution images taking 15 mins or so (56k) from a total post to load. I can't help but save the page to my computer and analyze the images and find out what's going on, then I compare this to image directory it came from on the board and find a very large image with a larger file size, why? Because we are using image tags to reduce the size it looks rather then taking the time to actually reduce the size of the file... tell me this makes any sense?

Deleting posts based apon the size of the image not the size of the file is pointless and is not solving the server space issue nor the bandwidth.

we check file size and image size if the file size is over 100k or the image is so big that it makes us have to scrole sideways to read the post it is subject to removal.

the image needs to be under 100K ideally, and sized such that the board doesn't become unreadable.   So there are two things you need to get right ;-)

480 x 360 is a nice size here, anything larger than 640 x 480 becomes problematic at times.

amd the default image tag that scoop puts in has size=80% in it, which does not help matters. admins- can we change that to be 100%? then folks might get a better feel for what they are doing?

also- if the admins are willing, scoop can be modified to check file sizes and image sizes, and even resize at upload time. this is the power of free as in speech software.

Out of curiosity, what resolution are you using? I have a large 20inch monitor and have it set to 1024x768. If you are using lower resolutions than you would have to scroll, otherwise you wouldn't. It sounds like your set to 800x600..

This is also a good question to ask the rest of the group... what resolution are you using?

640x480  -  800x600  -  1024x768  or higher

Also depends what browser you're using.  I exclusively use Firefox, which auto-sizes images.  Which runs me into trouble if I don't check image sizes before I upload them....

I run at my laptop's maximum res of 1280 x 800, so if I have to scroll sideways to see the rest of the picture, it's clearly way too big.

I almost always size mine to 480x360, its a nice size for this board.

http://www.jpegwizard.com/ is a free online optimiser if you happen to be at a computer w/o software on it - you submit photo and they email you link to temp web page w/ several versions of your picture to review and save for distribution...

Pegasus Software is ancient company; people have been fighting file size problems since day one. I used this service nearly twenty years ago!

I don't know how many people here use Windows for an OS.

But to all that do, it has a built in free program that will allow to resize pics very easily and still keep quality resolution.

So this is for those who might not know how.

Start/Programs/Accessories/Paint

Paintbrush will read alot of different file formats.  You can even press the print screen button on your keyboard and when you open a new file in Paint, you can just Edit/Paste.

After you open up your photo you want to Image/stretch_skew  and set x and y to 60%.

This will resize most any pic to under the 100 KB limit.

If your pic is real busy, you may need to use 50%.

Then do a Save AS....and pick a JPG format.

Remember that BMP files are huge....always reformat to a JPEG.
