Next Months Front Page Poll Question
« on: March 05, 2009, 03:19:15 PM »
Next March 21st I want to change the Front Page poll question to ask about, where everyone is located. I only have 10 available answers to select from for the poll responses. So How can I divide the world into 10 pieces. Here is my current suggestion.

 --- Where are You ? ---

 1  Canada

 2  United States

 3  South America

 4  Europe

 5  United Kingdom

 6  Asia

 7  Africa

 8  Russia

 9  Australia

 10 Other

I would kinda like to eliminate the "10 Other" Option

not sure if I'm overlapping some countries in the list either.

is there any other better way ?

Hey, Woof;

I bumped the value up to 20. Hopefully thats enough. Not sure who all can edit the number. It is under Site Controls >> polls.

If thats not enough I can bump it up higher.

Woof,

You might think about the big areas and divide some how. Africa, Asia, North America and Europe cut into regions make more sense that way.

At the risk of leaving any countries out, why not use continents instead?

Ah yes - chose sides time!

The seven Seas regions --- Arctic Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The seven continents regions --- Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Oceania... plus Indian subcontinent, Arabian Peninsula, Greenland, Zealandia, Madagascar.

Or... 192 member states of the United Nations (166 if you count the EU as one)

Or... to discard political conventions all together and try something new, ask which of the twenty largest bodies of water is nearest?

Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Arctic Ocean, South China Sea, Caribbean Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Bering Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Sea of Okhotsk, Sea of Japan, Hudson Bay, East China Sea, Andaman Sea, Red Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Yellow Sea, Persian Gulf, Gulf of California...

Good Luck Woofer !

The UK is geographically and politically part of Europe.

Maybe, as some have suggested, by continent including:

North America

South America

Europe

Asia-Pacific

I'm guessing that you can skip Antartica.

Europe is divided in 2 zones (there is no central Europe!)

- Western and Eastern

It is not accurate...they are just some terms that we European use to virtually divide the continent.

They say central Europe contains country's like: Germany, Austria, Eslovaquia, Hungary, Poland etc

But if Germany or Austria are western Europe country's , why they say is Central also? Well..it depends in where are you sitting right now. :)

This is the best approach:

Western Europe:

    *  Austria

    *  Belgium

    *  France

    *  Germany

    *  Liechtenstein

    *  Luxembourg

    *  Monaco

    *  Netherlands

    *  Switzerland

    *  United Kingdom

    *  Ireland

    *  Isle of Man

    *  Belgium

    *  France

    *  Netherlands

    *  Luxembourg

    *  Monaco

    *  Andorra

    *  Gibraltar

    *  Portugal

    *  Spain

Eastern Europe:

    * Albânia Albânia

    * Bielorrússia

    * Bósnia e Herzegovina

    * Bulgária

    * República Checa

    * Croácia

    * Eslováquia Eslováquia

    * Eslovênia

    * Estónia Estônia

    * Hungria Hungria

    * Predefinição:Kosovo

    * Letónia Letônia

    * Lituânia Lituânia

    * Macedónia, República da Macedónia

    * Moldávia

    * Montenegro

    * Polônia Polônia

    * Romênia

    * Rússia

    * Sérvia

    * Ucrânia

    * Armênia

    * Azerbaijão

    * Geórgia Geórgia

My opinion..use 2 lines for Europe

Regards from Portugal

For our collective purposes, I do not think England and Europe are the same.

Or Eastern Europe and Western Europe.

Something simple.  "It needs a P-FET."  No problem?

England is fine with that, stop at the local shop, call Farnells, or look on ebay.  Takes a day or 2.

Romania has a problem because P-Fets are apparently not stocked in Romania, paypal does not go into Romania (so no ebay), and international mail must be picked up in person during the work day on a specific day of the week.  A 29 cent TO-92 requires a 3 week wait and a day off work.

I have sent a lot of very basic parts all over the world, because I was the simplest option.

Wow...

How can you divide England from Europe?

Maybe i miss-understood your words, but i feel i should reply to that!

You should go deeper in common knowledge and try to get more info about what England is dependant from other country's and what Europe needs from England!

Maybe your ride is not a Rover or a Austin Martin!

"England is fine with that, stop at the local shop, call Farnells, or look on ebay.  Takes a day or 2."

In case you miss it.. check the country's of deliver!.

If i buy things from Farnell they will come from Spain!

http://www.farnell.com/

I don't know what's up in Romania...

Every country in every city there's electronics shops!! It takes 5 minutes to buy a P-FET!

Do you buy those in ebay or Farnells? 29 cent component and you are willing to pay 3 pounds for shipping? Bad choice!

" have sent a lot of very basic parts all over the world, because I was the simplest option."

You may be an OK option for large amounts...not for one piece!

Cheapest place on ebay in may opinion is Germany! People are just afraid of language so they prefer England.

1 Pound = 1,2Euros

Do you want to make a "top 10" country, a "top 10" location or divide the world in 10!

I only know that i know nothing!

  1. Scotland is not in England.
  2. Is Mexico in south America?
  3. Where do the Philippines fit the list?

Last (only) order I placed from Farnells came from England on the customs forms and shipped within hours of order placement.

"Europe" is not always accurate enough to tell what options are available.

That is what I was exactly talking about.  If England is Europe, then Romania should have P-fets on the shelf in the local shop.  Your Europe does.  His Europe does not.

If the local shops do not have the P-fet, then shipping happens.

Bad choice, or No choice.

What about a 555?  One man waited 3 weeks or a month for his son to bring one.  IIRC, I sent him one with some other common little items he could not get locally (Asia).  I believe he later refered to the envelope as a real life saver.

Tokyo has 555s, and it is in Asia, therefore he should have been able to find one with no trouble?

"For our collective purposes" if someone needs a P-fet in generic Europe,

or an unknown location needs a 24V 200W inverter,

it makes quite a lot of difference.

Another example.  I (USA) had to buy a 12V 300W inverter for a guy in Canada, then ship it to him...

Because the only place in North America that had them does not ship to Canada.

Why couldn't he just get the inverter in Canada?  Because it was Europe style 220V 50Hz.

Long story.

Every German I ever met spoke better English than me. :(

its Aston Martin. was owned by ford a us company. made in the middle of england ford has just sold it to god knows who. rover was sold to the chinese who promptly killed it. i get my parts from cpc which is owned by farnell but dosen't have a minimum order. life used to be so simple when you could just go to the local shop and get a hand crafted OC82  made by mullard.

could you make a rotating picture change on a timed change sort of like a calender. That way you would only have to do it once every couple of years. I do not know how much time that would take but just an idea.

Ages back there was a map: http://www.fieldlines.com/story/2006/2/21/21122/5830

Why not add a new one, or update that one, then everyone can add exactly where they are.

I am in France, Western Europe, just next to Spain.

Cheers

Woof;

 I'm thinking a different Poll question would be easier :)

Hopefully this reads funny.

   Woof-- you don't go after easy ones do you? Obviously lots of folks

following this one.  I am not sure what end result you are looking for,

but, would adding your location to your signature do it?  I wouldn't mind

or I wouldn't suggest, but some might.  Kind of like how Oz does it.      Of course finding out in advance would mean another poll.

   Just a thought.
