Encapsulating Solar Cells in Plastic.
« on: August 02, 2005, 05:59:18 PM »
Has anyone tried encasing their wired up cells in clear/white plastic? I would like to
make permanent panels, by wiring up cells, mounting them on a sheet of lexan and
then covering the back sides with a plastic resin (UV resistant of course). Possibly
to a thickness of about 1/4' to 1/2' for strength. I found a company
called Smoothon that makes just such a product but down-side is that its kind of expensive..
So I wanted to
know if its a good idea or not first, before spending my money.

Would the plastic trap heat? The colors I would consider would be white and clear.
How would this differ from commercial panels?

The fact sheets on the plastics I would use can be found here (white) and here (clear) (pdf). Has
anyone on the board used them, and what was your experience? Both appear to be made specifically

for outside use, (at least UV resistant) and the sealing nature of these plastics would stop condensation, NO?
